Newbie's Guide

First and foremost; DON\'T PANIC.
Second; If you have a question, the first place you should look is the player\'s guide that was installed with your game.  This is available online at http://www.planeshift.it/guide/index.html think of it as your hitchhiker\'s guide to Yliakum.
After looking in the guide there are a variety of helpful people ready to answer your questions.  The /advisor command followed by your question will pose the question to a more experienced and knowledgeable player who can then answer you.
If you need more technical or direct help you should then petition a GM.  This can be done via a button in the toolbar at the top of your screen; click the figure who appears to be praying and a window for petitions will open.  I believe the /petition command followed by a description will do the same thing, but the window is usually a better option.  Remember, like when asking an advisor a question, the more information the GM has the more information/help the GM can give you- so find a safe place (like the plaza) and type everything about the event you can think of.  Depending on the problem you may also need to take a screen shot.  An exhaustive discussion of screen shots is had here;

If you need a command and don\'t know where to find it there is also an in-game directory that can be accessed by /help or the question mark button in the top tray.  This is not an exhaustive list, it lacks such commands as /me for example, which is a role-playing tool and allows you to emote.
There is a basic map of the starting city (Hydlaa) here; http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=15772&boardid=1&styleid=3&sid=58caf7bb67f280e7ff49d6987b965fe4
it lacks some things, and isn\'t incredibly detailed but it\'s enough to start exploring.

As usual when starting a new game, it\'s advisable to start with a melee character- armors, weapons, etcetera, this will increase your survivability and the ease of learning many of the systems.
Also be aware that this game is in an open beta test state.  This means that you are actually looking for bugs and glitches, so don\'t be surprised when you find them.  Report them (take a screen shot if appropriate) and go about your play.  Remember, planeshift is and will always be free.  Expect bugs and you\'ll be impressed at how excellent the game really is.

Finally, you\'ve found an extremely useful tool in this forum.  Try to look through the posts in this area and others because many issues which you are facing have been asked about by others.  Creating many threads about the same topic makes the useful information harder to find.

If you have any questions, ask.  I\'ll try to edit this post to keep it updated as new things arise.
