1) 3DS Max 6, ZBrush

2) er, expensive I think.  It was a \"present\" too

3) .3ds .max

4) .3ds .obj

5) 3, maybe?

6) Most people in my opinion use 3DS Max6, but it doesn\'t come with it\'s own built in .obj importer/exporter you have to download one.

Also I would go with .obj as being the main file format, I think everyone can export to that.

Aye, .3ds is a stupidly complicated format if you want to import models from it into your program, since the company that made it has released very little documentation for it.  Plus its a binary file (i think) so trial and error to try and figure it out takes a while.  .obj on the other hand is ascii based, and is very well documented.  I finished work on the .obj importer yesterday, it can import basic things like models made with ordinary polygons.  Though i havnt implemented any advanced features like curves and other things yet.
