Integrate update and setup into main game menu
« on: July 26, 2005, 06:24:02 am »
Is there any particular reason why we have to run separate programs for the Updater and setup configs?

My idea is for these to be integrated? When I load the game, have it automatically check for new updates and possibly call the updater externally if there\'s need to update everything.

Also, have a settings option in loadup game menu so I can click on settings. You could possibly load it externally at that point.
This is a politically correct sig that offends nobody. In the event of offense, I deny everything. Thats right, it wasnt me. In the event of a Civil Lawsuite proclaiming Liability, I bring to witness a cat who walked over my keyboard, typing words in this exact order. If asked, the cat denies all.

Just in case you change a setting that FUBARs everything, you have the settings separate so they can always be accessed.  After things become a little more reliable, yeah, all 3 programs should be merged.

Bandwidth... you put too mcuh overhead everytime someone logs on.  This could cause more server failure...  I could be wrong but this is my concern.

(have you ever tried having 100+ peep ping a computer... now try 1000+  Now try anywhere between do it and if it does not recieve and answer do it again forever!!!!!  Bad traffic)

Honestly, I don\'t see bandwidth being an issue at all.  (the recent server crashes were from a dead fan, btw)  A quick check for new updates shouldn\'t take up anymore bandwidth then walking in-game for a second or two.  The updater could be made more efficient than it is, though.  Right now, it downloads the entire registry each time.  If it were to just check for the last update\'s date, and only proceed further if there\'s actually something new, much bandwidth would be saved.  (Eventually, we\'d want the updates to be required for logging in, so making them automatic would be the best move.)  After this and some other kinks are worked out, merging the 3 programs would be just fine.
