quest phrases ect.
« on: November 05, 2005, 04:51:10 pm »
I wish that the npcs could understand more varriations of the same phrase instead of having to find the exact right phrase.

Well, as far as I know, they do so already. For example when obtaining a quest you can say at least three different things.

But communicating with npcs stays hard indeed, I think it will cost a fair amount of work before speaking with them feels \'normal\' and not like trying to guess the right imput.

What if there was an icon in target_context which was the equivalent of \"Ask for a job\"?  You don\'t have to say \"Sell me something\" in order for the trade window to pop up, why not make it the same for asking him for a job?

In a few other RPGs of note, as soon as you approach a NPC he or she might ask you if you\'re busy or if you\'re able to help him or her out with a job or problem.  Then you give a yes or no response and carry on from there.

AMOF, in the very beginning I tried exactly that (\"What do you sell?\" and \"Show me your wares!\") and was disappointed that it didn\'t work. Same for training.

Yes, however it is possible to make NPCs to react to this. Actually, this way of asking for training is (or was?) working in (at least) one place...  (I refuse to post a spoiler:P )

EDIT: I have checked it, doesn\'t work anymore :(

Yea but if you walk down your street i dont think everyones gunna ask you to do them a favor or do a job. Its better to go find a job rather then have the job find you. And then it would give away where each quest was. (example-Im looking for the pet quest.. i did all the quests possible other than the pet quest. I walk around by all the NPCs and the one with the quest would be the only one to talk to me, therefor giving away the mystery of where the quest was)

As much as I hate to say this; I think the npc interface really should be more like most other MMOs (ducks)

I mean, they have it that way in games for a reason, right?  I\'d much rather have to suspend my disbelief a little more and be able to click on the right phrase than sit there for hours trying to phrase my request perfectly.  As it is, it doesn\'t feel like I\'m talking to a real person, it feels more like I\'m talking to a computer generated moron who doesn\'t understand the language he\'s supposed to speak.

For most chatting up of the npcs, I like the system, But for quests, shopping, etc., I think a menu should exist (even if only after meeting certain requirements)

PlaneShift has and certainly will have some similarities to other MMORPGs, but not everything that works for one game will work here. Here, realism is meant to be everything - and that includes interaction with NPCs. The current problem stems from the fact that this is all a work in progress, so people are frustrated that they cannot do much, or find the correct things to say; but this all will disappear once the NPCs evolve. Just give it time, it will be better.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Hmm, I\'m still very skeptical that it\'ll actually feel realistic talking to npcs, but if y\'all can pull it off and grant the near total immersion that this would imply I, and I\'m sure many of my friends, will be so impressed that I can forsee all of my free time spent in front of PS.

Best of luck in this (extremely involved) endeavor, I\'ll certainly be doing whatever I can to help with it.
