the annoyances of animated .gifs
« on: October 24, 2005, 01:04:58 am »
some small animations such as the dancing bannana and other comical things i have seen arn\'t ment to be put down in this rant, the bigger more flashy.gifs are,  i am begging to get tired of those animated .gifs that seems like whould cause seizures almost instantly, inorder to make a image of a decent size the animation can\'t be long so you often see 1 or 2 second animations (at the most) the never stop repeating, am i the only one who thinks this should no longer be used, or or are you one of those kids with a.d.d. that finds those \"l33t, kool, niffty, spiffy\" or do you just like pissing people eyes off?

**wonders how many people will posted animated .gifs here**

Damn stright, talk about Mr.Banana and you also get to talk to Mr.Fist. :)

I dont find them that annoying, there was a guy that had an actual song in his sig in another forum I used to go to, now that was annoying.

Although this is just short of spam...

I think we all agree that large animated .gif\'s are the scourge of the internet.  I\'m sure you could find someone to write a nice firefox extension to block them for you.

What I find a whole lot more annoying is swf. It is used nearly exclusively for annoying ads, and it cannot be gotten rid of like images can.
I would wish for an option in FF to \"block swf from this site\", just like with images. Likewise, \"allow .swf for the original server only\" would be highly neat.
Well, I simply removed the .swf dll for now, but still it\'s annoying to have to manually reenable it when I want to view one of the few legitimate .swfs.

Adblock of Firefox had/has an option to get rid of .swf\'s, no? I clearly remember blocking tons of these :P

Hm! I have not installed any extensions. Good to know, I\'ll install that, then. :)

Actually I meant my message was just short of being spam.
Not as in repeating, but completely useless postcount upping material.

I\'ll have to start getting firefox extensions as well.  :)

You can always turn sigs off in your profile options, I do on every forum I join as most of them aren\'t worth looking at.

Wasn\'t ever really annoyed by those, but seconds ago I\'ve seen Yayoo\'s sig. So that changed.

Anyway, yeah, Mr. banana is cool. He dances to the songs I play on winamp and stuff...

Edit: Oh, didn\'t notice... I have a gif thingy in my sig too.

Forum sigs aren\'t (AFAICS) what this thread is about. It\'s more about the entire internet being cluttered up by images that really have no relevance and are used most of the time to smuggle tracking cookies onto your system or trace your IP, or both, for advertisement abuses.

I get around this by setting \"load images from the original server only\" in FF (though this also disables forum sigs and posted images, but it\'s just a few clicks to turn it on temporarily).
The banana is OK, as is the pacman thingy. Now, if there were more than, say, three bananas, that would be highly annoying...

Sorry but didn\'t realise from the first post that it wasn\'t about forum sigs :)

However I also use the Flashblock extension for FF used in addition to  Adblock it cuts out almost all animated images.
