Extra featurefor Character customisation
« on: July 11, 2004, 11:55:46 pm »
This is a pretty simple Idea, Since PlaneShift runs on computer systems, instead of consoles, every user has access to graphic editing software. It might be quite hard to implement codewise though, but I think it would work. In GTA3, although it is only 1p campain, on PC you can skin your character. To do that on this game would be impossible, because of bandwith issues. But, What would work is to have small Black and white images of a maximum res of say 48x48, thats tiny icon size monochrome bitmap, only 1 or two kilobytes max. So, what would be a cool idea would be to have a tatoo option, say a parlour somewhere where an npc gives you a tatoo. . . It would have to bring up a custom menu, similar to the character visual details page with a view of your cahracter in, where you can use a list box to select a tatoo image from a folder in the game directory, a few predesigned tatoos, or a player can add their own, and you would select the location on the character by dragging it around, say there was a front view and a back view, and the tatoo obviously followed the contour of it\'s body. Then there would be an RGB colour selector. This way, when another player saw you, the tiny monochrome bitmap would be sent to them, along with the location on the body, and an RGB colour. This would have to be limeted to say 3 tatoos, and would add a whole new diemsion to character customisation. Oh, and the other thing, Scars should remain, but you should be able to pay a magician to heal a disabled limb. this is fantasy after all. . .

The idea of scars and tattoos has been discussed already.

Your approach unfortunately has a major flaw: the very second ppl. can arbitrarily alter their chars, there _will_ be i.e. tattoos saying \"U SUCK\" or \"1337 K1ll4h\"... I therefore propose that all tattoos need to be submitted to a mod who then includes them in the updates. Of course, the copyright for them needs to be transferred to PS (under the PS license) or public domain. This way everybody will have them once they update, no bandwidth issues there.

why not set them for clans? each clan has its own tatto.. so there would be a choice of preselected tattos that have been allready uploaded and the leaders choose which one to represent there clan.. and then all members will automaticly have that tatto.?

Many thanks,

I think there should be the option for clan-tattoos. They should, however, not be fixed in position. Especially for the stealthy ppl. it would be kind of revealing if they had \"thieves guild\" tattooed on their foreheads. ;)
They could leave it to the members to select the position of the clan tattoo (or none if they wish to, but that might be the clan leaders choice). I\'m OK with that. I\'d still like tattoos to be available for others as well.

tatoos would be cool. Why not program a tonyhawk underground style character custimization. Sure it\'d be hell but at least everyone could look diiferent down to the size of there nose. I\'d wait as long as it took for a feature like that.

I would think clan/guild markings might be a better idea than a tatto.. less obvious and better i suppose.

although have a member placed tattoo would result in imature players placing the tatto in certain areas... it maybe some what funny but its not very responsible considering that there are younger players that play the game..

Many thanks,

So we could exclude these areas from tattoo placement. I still like the tattoo idea but  of course there are certain possibilities for abuse which need to be taken into account. At least we could make it depend on playtime as many other things. This will not get rid of all problematic players but will reduce the problem. The rest could IMO be moderated.
So we have exclusion areas (they should be covered by clothes anyway, shouldn\'t they?) :) and moderated tattoo databases and playtime dependance and in-game moderation. And maybe a client option to not show these extras (for slower computers).
