An Error
« on: December 22, 2005, 10:38:02 pm »
While loading the world, I get this error saying:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\\Program Files\\Planeshift Crystal Blue\\psclient.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unsual way. Please contact the application\'s support team for more information.

*edit*

Also get a couple more errors, one about DBGHELP.DLL not found, and one about drwatson.exe performing an illegal operation

I looked in my PlaneShift directory and DBGHELP.DLL is there

Please refrain from double-posting. Simply edit your last post to add new information, if no one has replied yet :) --Karyuu

DBGHELP?

Mmmm if I recall correctly I had an error on that same file when we had those frequent extremely lag times with the server, packets were lost, fps dropped down to a very little rate and all clients crashed sooner or later.
Fortunately those chapters aren\'t repeating themselves, so it seems that was fixed (another thing are the lag chapters)
I\'d recommend you to ensure that you\'ve the latest version installed, to do that, go to all programs-planeshift-planeshift updater (recover mode) launch it and let it do its job.

Also the errors that you report, seem like if you were trying to debug an initial error message or something, because I think drwatson is a tool of Microsoft that picks all the information avaiable for debugging purposes.

If you have already the latest version, I\'d recommend disabling sound on the planeshift setup utility, and see if this time you launch the game.
Of course, I assume you meet this:

Minimum Requirements:

    * Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris
    * GeForce 2 or higher 3D graphics card
    * 1 Ghz CPU
    * 512 MB RAM
    * 1 GB free disk space
    * 56k modem Internet connection

Recommended Requirements:

    * Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Linux or FreeBSD
    * GeForce 4 or higher 3D graphics card
    * 2 Ghz CPU
    * 1 GB RAM
    * 1 GB free disk space
    * Broadband Internet connection

Ok.

Try moving the file to a different folder, so you don\'t have the dll on your ps folder anymore. Launch again the updater, it will get a new one, perhaps you\'ll be able to launch the game then.

I uploaded the copy of the dll file that I have in my planeshift directory.
Try it and see if it helps, if it doesn\'t, I don\'t know what could be going wrong. Perhaps you\'d try a reinstallation?

Ahhh... this is why I... don\'t like Windows. Usually error messages do not say anything of value :( In similar cases my standard advice is: reinstall system, it is much faster then trying to fix the problem.
Use google, You will find similar problems caused by: viruses, spyware, conflicting software, Office XP compoonents, incorrect file/directory permisions, broken DirectX or DCOM installation... it means - anything can be cause of this (a joke: changing the shape of mouse cursor can make your system unstable ;) )

I wish You luck. really.

Very sad. I downloaded the dbghelp, gave me the runtime error again, reinstalled, and now my IE doesn\'t work! My dad had to drag the setup file of his Firefox to a jump drive and put it on my computer. I guess it\'s time to uninstall Planeshift and find another RPG.

Nonono, don\'t resign from Planeshift. I don\'t belive that everything else works flawlessly on your computer. Maybe it is time to find another OS ?...
Or, as it was suggested, reinstall Windows, it is quite normal maintenance operation in case of this system (backup your data first!).

Wired_Crawler:  Based on Speed Demon\'s posts, I don\'t think he/she has the technical capability to do a clean reinstall of Windows.  (no offense intended)  The dad sounds like he might be able to do it, though I don\'t know if he\'d want to for this.  ;)

I\'ve had the dbghelp.dll whatsit error come up before when I was running low on system resources due to something rotting in RAM.  It went away, though.  So, do you meet the requirements Nilrem posted?  If you do, check your task manager (get from ctrl+alt+del menu, or use ctrl+shift+esc on XP) and see how many useless progs you have floating in the background.  And, for the love of crap, you shouldn\'t have been using IE in the first place.  Use FireFox like a sane person.  :rolleyes:

Have you got a virus scanner? Norton picks up most viruses, spyware, trojans, etc.

It could be a virus on your system.

Other than that formatting your hardrives doesn\'t sound like a bad idea
