Game won't start
« on: January 26, 2006, 02:41:09 pm »
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Processor: Intel P4 @ 3 Ghz, multithreading enabled (2 virtual processors)
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
System Memory: 1 GB
Video Memory: 512 MB

I just downloaded and installed the game. I ran the updater, which worked fine, but when I try to start the game, the console window just appears very briefly, does not output anything and then disappears. The setup application behaves the same.

I tried reinstalling the game without running the updater, and had the same problem. I also changed the graphics drivers to the Omega ATI drivers, which didn\'t help.

Any ideas? Can this be related to the ATI card (which seems to be badly supported)?

run the updater. always run the updater. run it in recover mode if normal mode doesn\'t work.

also try the latest drivers from ati themselves, may work better for you.

it may be a bit of a long shot but try disabling multithreading. it may be doing something wierd to ps.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

The updater runs just fine. It\'s the game and setup applications that won\'t start.

I forgot to mention that I tried ATI\'s latest drivers as well.

I\'ll try disabling multithreading.

*edit*

Nope, disabling multithreading didn\'t help.

You mentioned seeing output on the console window - seeing it could help. Find the file \'psclient.txt\' in your main PlaneShift directory after you run PlaneShift once more time, and paste its contents here. Or better yet, paste it here and give us the link :)

I forget how long rafb holds pastes.  (they\'re only temporary, I think)  Just pasting the whole pile here isn\'t going to kill us like it would on IRC.  ;)

I have two computers with ATI Radeon (one is 9600 and the other one is a Mobility 9700) and I can run PS just fine. I think the problem might be something else.

No, there is no output in the console window. It just appears and closes at once.

When I try running the files in the command prompt, I get no output either, and no psclient.txt is created:

c:\\games\\planeshift_crystal_blue>psclient.exe

c:\\games\\planeshift_crystal_blue>pssetup.exe

c:\\games\\planeshift_crystal_blue>type psclient.txt
The system cannot find the file specified.

Similar issue here -= InstaCrash on psclient / pssetup / psupdater (basically any Win32 CS app). I *can* start and run the game, but stricly when starting it under a debugger and stepping over the first two push-es and the first call. And only if I let it crash once first.
This holds true for the Win32 distribution and any CVS version I compile. The crash is at 0x00747865 (obviously part of a string, not a real address). Seems to be related to the w* family of string functions.

They don\'t crash for me, and updater.exe runs fine, but it\'s still possible that it\'s the same problem. I was unable to run psclient in a debugger. It just locked up, which is interesting because it doesn\'t do that when I just run it. It makes no difference if I skip the first pushes and call.

I m on Mac OsX

when i launch the psclient updated,  the border of the windows appear and disappear.
when i launch the psclient not updated, i have the windows opened correctly

then i try to launch the psclient updated in the terminal and it say that :

WARNING: could not load plugin \'crystalspace.kernel.vfs\'
 * This likely means that the plugins could not be found.

If you\'re a user: Check the working directory the application starts from -
usually, it is the same as the directory with the executable.
If in doubt, contact the vendor.

If you\'re a developer: Check if the CRYSTAL environment var points to the
correct location - usually the directory CS was built in.
ERROR: csInitializer::SetupConfigManager failed!
Is your CRYSTAL environment variable set?

what can i do  ???????

There is a problem with a mirror of the forums. Try this one:

You\'d change your bookmarks to planeshift3d.com if you have the other link.
