Rosetta
« on: March 02, 2006, 07:44:09 am »
Allright,

I simply cannot resist the temptation anymore and decided to buy by the end of the month, beginning next month a Macbook Pro. :baby:
However I am concerned about how Planeshift will perform with Rosetta. The built-in PPC emulator.
Aparrently the applications that were running during the demonstrations by Steve Jobs during the keynote speech were pretty smooth.
Either way I will give regular reports on performance once I get it.
However I would like some insight on problems I could face.  ?(

Hypothetical problem: It\'ll run like molasses.

Solution: Be brave and develop mad compilation skills!

Well I guess this is a good time as any to start learning programming.  :P
I had the intention to do it anyway since a while but never had the time ... allthough in a month time I don\'t think I will get very far.  :(
I just need to find a good \"school\" where they teach how to work with xcode  ;)

Well, for CS/CEL/PS we don\'t really use Xcode except maybe as a code editor, but hopefully you won\'t have to do that.  Most of everything is built from the commandline, so the more you know about working in Terminal and bash or tcsh the better.

Aaaahhh.... ok ... I will start downloading CS/CEL/PS source right away and toy around a bit.  :P
It was by toying (and a lot of skimming through the man pages) that I learned to use the Terminal.  ;)
I have never compiled before but I will learn. I really love this project and would love to contribute.

You *will* need to download the apple developer tools to get gcc and some other things that you\'ll need... I think you have to get an ADC login first (which is totally free).  Other than that, the \"fink\" package manager maybe?

If you talk to Cha0s or I on IRC, we can probably help you out.

You\'ll also need to get a nice built Cal3D from one of us if you want so save yourself a headache. Dfryer probably has a newer one than me, since he gave me the one he built a while back. :)

Well ... I am ADC Member since quiet some time now ... and have the lates version of Xtools installed.
I use mainly interface builder to create and change some interfaces. However as far as code programming goes I am a complete newb .. I did some GW-BASIC  8o about 9 years ago (gosh, am I getting old :P ) .. but would have to refresh my knowledge of computer programming.
As far as compiling goes this will be my first shot. So I will take advantage of this month to document myself and take some classes... as time allows of course. Then once I get the Macbook I can start right away. I think it will be important to go with the transition because Apple plans to change their whole computer line by the end of the year.
I will also get Fink tomorrow and I will speak with Dfryer about the Cal3D.

Wait... I just realized that the Cal3D thing probably won\'t work. Dfryer and I have similar configurations... I doubt PPC Cal3D will like Intel. :( So you\'ll have to go through building Cal3D as well... I\'d look into checking out Cal3D, Crystal Space (CS), Crystal Space Entity Layer (CEL), and Planeshift (PS) source from sourceforge.net. There are suggested source dates listed on the IRC channel #planeshift-build (chat.freenode.net is the network). Familiarize yourself with the \"cvs\" command in Terminal. It\'ll help you get the source.
