Many Problems ><
« on: March 13, 2006, 06:06:52 am »
Hi, i\'m new here, and i\'ve tried to everything! I first downloaded the Bittorrrent opener and the Planeshift Bittorrent file, then clicked on the DMG that come from the Planeshift Bittorent, and it says every time I try, \"The followng disk images failed to mount; Image: PlanetshiftCB_v13. Reason: No mountable file systems\". After that, I tried downloading the file from one of your\' mirrors, but of them didn\'t work. Then, I downloaded he file \"PlaneshiftCB_v0.3.010dmg\" and tried running the psclient in that one, but it was buggy and i couldn\'t see where I needed to click and what anything said.

After that, I downloaded the \"Planeshift 3D\" file from your guide and went throught the exact steps, followed everything. When I was updating the files in the folder, it said \"Error: Contents/(Instert item here) couldn\'t be updated\". Not all weren\'t able to update, just most. When it came time to enter the 3 things into the Termial, the first one, \"chmod 755 psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient\" without the perenthesis, wouldn\'t work, it said it didn\'t exist. I continued witht the guide, skipping that one thing, and tried to open the pssetup.app, ad it flashes, goes grey, then doesn\'t do anything. The some thing happens with the psclient.app and the psupdate.app. I don\'t know what else to do, and i\'ve heard nothing but good things about this game. Any help would be appriciated^^ Thanks.

First and second: Many threads tell not to use the updater or the mirrors at this time.

The problem with the disk image not mounting (obviously after having opened the dmg) is usually caused by bits of the file missing--which is usually caused by a memory chip problem, but could have happened in the torrent hashing.

The chip problem can be intermittent--if you get this problem occasionally then you will probably want a full memory diagnostic (it is usually not detectable using the tech software that comes with your mac, but you can try it repeatedly) You should also activate always on console and crash logging, so you can get all the reports of what it happening for your techs to see.

SIMPLE PART
If it something that has never happened before and only happens with this file--you should redo the torrent thing to get the dmg.  Don\'t forget to eject your current disk image and erase your current dmg, before redoing the torrent.

If it happens again, then download a different dmg (which creates a disk image) and open it to be a disk image.  If it continues, chances are you have a memory chip problem--but it could also be an OS bug which you have with the mounting of disk images (a piece of your OS is corrupt).

I see, then it might be my memory chip. I haven\'t had this problem before, so I wasn\'t sure what to do. Thanks^^

to make sure you should do the easy part

get a new file and open it.

You said it never did it before, if it never does it again, then it was the torrent hashing.

More information would help-but from this last post it sounds like you opened the .torrent file, but you would\'ve had to get the dmg at some point for it to generate a disk image that didn\'t mount.

What torrent client program are you using to get the planeshift.dmg?

I guess I\'ll go thru the steps:
Get a torrent client
load the .torrent file from the dowload site into the client
after it is completely loaded from the swarm--open the .dmg file
This starts a disk image, open the disk image and find the psclient app
double click while connected to the internet

What are you doing?

I recommend the Azureus client for torrent swarms, seee thread for that.

I\'m using the one that is on the downloads page of the main site... I didn\'t download a bittorrent opener from anywhere before. Unless the one on the main sites\' downloads page isn\'t the one your talking about, i\'m confused, but i\'ll try the Azureus.

Sorry for the delay, I got choked.  I had to kick the host.

[reason for double post]

The one available through the link is good for most people, I\'ve never used it.

I am familiar with Azureus (but you don\'t have to use it)

With Azureus you just open the url for the download from the site, by entering the url from that link into a simple window.

But you say you have got the dmg through the swarm--right?
And you have done this more than once--right?
And you deleted the old ones you had before loading a new one?

Yes, I got it from the swarm, yes I have done this more than once and yes, I deleted the old ones before downloading a new one. I am confused on how to use Azureus, because I chose to open the torrent with Azureus and it took over 8 hours, then it stopped at 99.9 percent... lol what a day >< This is so confusing to me lol

Surprised no one has helped you yet, it sounds like the file from the swarm is corrupt.

Especially if you loaded a .dmg from elsewhere and it opened a disk image.

Azureus has a very well written wiki for help and FAQ, I can\'t remember at the moment the causes of the 99.9%, but that it took 8 hours is an indicator that your connection is choked or there are not enough good seeds in the swarm.

If you want to yank the ear of devs gms or mods, there is an IRC channel at freenode.net--channel #planeshift.  Otherwise you may want to wait until the file is available on mirrors.

[I think I may test the swarm--see what is going on]

These kindo of things seem to make Planeshift a torture on the people who choose to play it.  In fact, the whole game reminds me of deliberately created problems in classes for computer.

[Right now I\'m closed out do to an oversight on reconfigure--do you think I should help them just so I can play?]

Hehe, yea. This game looks really nice, and I am shocked its free. I\'ll try the IRC Chat, ut i\'m sure it might take a while for it to be fixed. My connection is very fast, Cable, and not sure if this will help, but my Mac version is 10.3.9.

(Edit- Where do I go to find the IRC Chat? I went to freenode.net and it said all this stuff on it, but no place to start IRC Chat. Or I might be blind^^ lol)

You\'ll need an IRC client. I\'m not on IRC much myself, but when I am, I use Colloquy.

In Colloquy, go to File > New Connection. Type in a nickname, then type irc.freenode.net in the chat server box and click Connect.

Next go to File > Join Chat Room. Make sure irc.freenode.net and your nickname appears in the connection box and type #planeshift in the chat room box and click Join.

It might take a moment while it connects but a new window for the chat room should now appear and you\'ll be all set.
