I believe the best way to learn about a MMORPG (other than figuring it out for yourslef) is to pick up things from more experienced players. The best thing about MMO games is the player interaction.

In a newbie Island, you would be surrounded by other newbies, other people who know nothing about the game.

There\'s more ways to learn things in a realistic way.
The best way to learn the basics is to read a book written for Newbies. (I don\'t like the word n00b) If the game includes a writing-system you could write books with facts about the surroundings, and even \"how to\" books.
\"How to make your first meal\", \"how to build a house\", \"how to mine and smelt metals\", \"how to get a life\" and so on...
The beginner-books should contain pictures and \"easy reading\" (for non-english speaking people) to make things become a little easier for us newbies.
You should have a book containing the basics in your inventory from the beginning.
There should also be a pop-up system containing info about the game (and a cute animal explaining everything to you :D  ) which you could turn on and off.

Not everybody is hard-core RPG-gamers you know ;)

Im just talking out of my arse here, but arent all of us newbies, since the game is not out yet and none have played the game actual game ?

The newbie island idea is terrible, books and other newbies are all you need to get into the game. Team up with someone, go to a bar, walk around. The controls and sych should be explained in a manual, put the rest is up to each and everyone to learn from themselfs. If someone decides to make a school for newbies later, in game, instead of beeing a hunter, that would be nice. But no newbie island !!

And what is the game that should not be mentioned ?

One word:  readme.

Stick that in the download and website and everything will be ok.

And don\'t have any NPCs that say \"Now click on me to talk with me, and click on badguys to squish them.\"  I haven\'t met anyone that tells me to talk with him to communicate, or to hit my enemies to win.  (Ok, bad example.  But NPCs should roleplay, even if players do not, and saying \'click here\' isn\'t roleplaying.)

If you have the word \"newbie\" in your forum title, then I don\'t understand why you would start this topic.

I agree with reading books and talking to NPCs who are there to help you to learn.

Of course, enterprising fans will put up websites explaining everything in grave detail, but not everyone will have the patience for these.

Perhaps some ambitious player will end up writing a bunch of the newbie tutorial books and making a lot of tria from it?  :-)
