Voice Stuff
« on: January 27, 2003, 01:36:37 am »
First of all, sorry about the bland topic, if there is another post about this, or if this is in mmorpg\'s already.

But I find that it would be nice to be able to directly talk to someone.  I know that when i am playing other games such as Counter Strike (to name one) i prefer to talk to someone with a mic rather than typing it out.  It provides for more individualized interaction and sometimes it helps get your point across more effectivly and emotionally.

Just a Suggestion,

Thats a great idea.... Though I think it would be much more in programing than available at this time. Maybe some day it can go in.

This is only possible for people with both broadband and spare CPU cycles (for encoding, decoding and mixing the audio).  Judging from the posts on these boards, most people are lacking in both areas.  Also, voice masking would be almost a requirment for RPing aspects (ie XBox grade masking is excelent, but proprietary). For these reasons (and the fact that I have not heard of an exploitable GLP\'d code for this task) it will be a long time before this could be considered for PS (imo).

Ok, so let\'s make this straight.
CS is a \"shoot em\' up\". SeU have small servers.
PS is a MMORPG which often uses larger servers. If you would use direct speak the game would LAGG a LOT!!

well what about sound macros?
this could be a cheap, cheap, very, very cheap way of adding a little life to the game. It could be kinda cool to.
you can make each race have a differrent sound and you touch a button and what ever race says hello. you can have a few different sounding commands aswell to and it wouldn\'t take up much bandwidth because the sound effects would be on the user side. oh and you could also let the server decide what sounds where played of each action so that you wouldn\'t have a bunch of people saying the same sound to greet someone. like the server or whatever it is could make a crowd noise affect by spicing up the same commands with different dialects that relate to the amount of people around.

or nevermind scrap this crappy idea

I\'m guessing you\'d have to do some kind of peer-to-peer sound instead of going through the server to get rid of the bandwidth problems.  It would also be nice to exploit broadcast router features to get multiple end points for the sounds you make.  Individual clients would have to do the sound mixing.  As mentioned earlier, you\'d have to have a nice gfx card and nice rig in general to avoid the lag.

I think that would be nice to have, but I\'m not sure it would be that useful as an RP tool.  In an action game, it works to help combat along.  In a RP game, it may just cheapen the experience.  The only benefit I can see is helping to locate each other if true 3D audio is well intergrated (ie yelling \'HELP\" if your lost in a tunnel).
