PS Client uses too many resources
« on: July 09, 2006, 02:44:44 am »
The PS Client uses 100% of my CPU all the time. Second problem is, that it uses 500 MB memory when i start the client and after 10 minutes it uses 1,8 GB. The client crashes when the memory is full after 15 minutes. I still tried to reinstall again and again.

If someone can help me with that problem, it would be very nice.

100% cpu usage is par for the course

but what are your system specs.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

To try to reduce the CPU usage:

When ingame, go to the options menu then graphics-details:

Focus on fps cap, its default value should be 62, change it to 30.
Save changes.

Navigate around and see if the game looks choppy for you (it shouldn't)
Check CPU usage, it should be lower.

As for memory usage... perhaps you crashed and didn't finish the process on background? Unfortunately now PS uses to be left running in background eventhough you've tried to exit it.

ok i changed the fps cap to 30 and it works a bit better now. but the problem still exists. cpu usage is still at 100% and memory usage is growing until the max at about 2 gb and then it crashes. when i quit plane shift the memory usage goes to normal 211 mb. i thought that things are loaded to memory when they are needed and system will clear them from memory when it doesnt need them any more.
i downloaded and installed the game again. i installed an other graphic driver, but nothing helped. i have no idea what else can i do.
or can it be that plane shift doesnt work with a 64 bit processor?

Should work fine on a 64-bit processor... it sounds like there's a big memory leak somewhere which is causing your high memory usage. But I don't see anyone else noticing such memory increases, so I wouldn't think that's the problem here.

Are you using the load all maps or the keep maps loaded options in pssetup? If so then disable them and try again.

Theoretically sound memory issues have been fixed, but it's always better to discard possibilities.

Try turning sound of using your PSsetup utility, and then launch the game, see if it makes any difference.
Also, are you sure that you have no psclient.exe left running in background?
Having the client start already using 500 MB is a bit too much, I'd say.

i turned sound off, but nothing changed. im sure that there is only one ps client running.

i made a screenshot of my task manager, wich i could post here. but i dont know if its allowed and if its usefull.

You can use imageshack or any other image hoster you prefer to post it.
I don't know if it's going to help, but it's certainly allowed. If you don't want others to see what programs you're running, you've always the option of only show the task manager screen and blur/hide any process you don't want anyone to see.

Still, the fact that your cpu keeps, no matter what still at 100% and the memory increases in such a manner is indeed weird.
Have you scanned your harddrive for virus/spyware?

Edit: Perhaps you'd add too a shot of your PSconfig utility.
This severe usage is really weird  ???

ok i checked my system with antivir 7 (after updating) for viruses and it seems to be clean. i will post the screenshots now, maybe you can figure out the problem.

The first thing that impacts me is...  ::|

you've texture downsampling at 1/4 yet that causes far more memory usage than on my system, and you're always at 100% usage on cpu...

Just... could you try putting the "texture downsampling" back to 1/1?
(The other thing I've different than you is the "Multisample for quality" that I've enabled, and the resolution I am the weird one that plays at 800x600 :D But first try playing with that texture downsampling thing, let's see if it uses less memory when put in 1/1  :-X then the next step would be touch the multisample thing... perhaps there's a bug with one of those options...)

i tried now different settings in multisample and downsampling but the used memory is getting higher and higher when planeshift is running.
it looks like the system is not able to remove not needed files from memory. its very confusing to me that no other players have this problem.
maybe its a problem with my windows or an other installed program .. but there are only a few programs installed now and everything is up to date.

 :(

Well... I tried to use your same config to see if that ate more memory or what... it seems not.

I noticed that PSsetup still uses 100% cpu, and that's already reported.

I also noticed another thing, that perhaps might help you.
Seems that you end crashing because the game eats all memory avaiable.

I've noticed that when I start the game, PS uses about 250 MB of memory. If I minimize the window, the cpu goes to 0 and mem usage to 30 MB, when restoring, memory raises up from that value. I haven't tested for a long period of time (sorry) but it achieved something like 65 MB.

Perhaps this can be a workaround for you. Join the game, see how much ram uses, minimize it, see if cpu goes to 0, and mem usage reduces greatly, click again to bring the screen back on, monitor ram usage... if with this method you manage to lower the mem usage value, then this may be your workaround for playing the game :S

Edit: Changed RAM for memory. More precise. :)

Just as a side note:

The Operating system only frees the memory used when the program is terminated, for whatever reason.
As long as the program is running, it is responsible for its allocated memory (unless PS were written in Java or similar, but that wouldn't be fun).
I had similar problems on my Linux machine with 0.3.14, although the memory demand increased slowly, and when I doubled my Ram to 1 GB it wasn't much of a problem anymore.

One question:
Does PS occupy ever more memory if you pretty much stay in one place? Might be a bit of a boring task, but maybe you could simply comfort yourself at Kada-El's and watch the memory consumption over time.

Regarding the high CPU load:
Hey, a CPU also needs its proper training to stay in shape, or do you want to raise a couch-potato within your computer? ;-)
