Smithing

I don\'t know if anyone has posted about this yet but here goes...

Smithing of weapons, armors, shields, etc are supposed to be some sort of art, right?

Am thinking, why not have the player do some kind of mouse twirling in order to create a specific \"item\" with its own unique attributes. The more accurate their \"pattern\" is the better the stats of the \"item.\" ( Imagine Black & White and Harry Potter ) The more skill you have in smithing the steadier the mouse pointer becomes.

Then you can also combine certain mouse \"patterns\" with the correct \"timing\" and the correct materials to combine certain attributes.

For example, to make a shield w/ certain attributes, you make some kind of a circular pattern then w/in exactly 5 seconds you have to put it in the oven for exactly 3 seconds and then you make a cross pattern then put it back right away into the water. Then the water must be exactly 56.542 degrees  :D  Anyway, am sure you get the idea.

This can also be used in other fields, not only smithing, like, pottery, jewelry, alchemy, some kind of spell casting and other stuff like that.

I can see mouse gestures in magic casting (or enchanting), but blacksmithing?  Tinkering (fantasy gold/bronze/etc small item smithing) takes great care with molds, filing, etc.  Blacksmithing for armor, weapons, etc. is less of a \"fine\" art.  There is timing for proper heating and there is a lot of skill involved, but it is definately on a diiferent level.  IMO, any intricate \'smithing system should work more like a chemestry set (A+B*Heat+Skill...whatever).  For more of my thoughts on this , see this thread for my thoughts on blacksmithing.

I like the idea of using runes to give your weapons atrributes, but most warriors or blacksmiths don\'t really have the intelligence required for major spells, you would have to be like a war mage to be able to do something like that. Something else, instead of a bunch of intrecate acts, why not just make the sword, then within a time limit, you make all the spells you want on it. The more spells you cast, the more difficult it is to cast a successful blessing to the sword, or something.
