The Trader of Rat Skin
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:53:37 pm »
"Die!" Orac shouted as he lunged at a large one-eyed sewer rat in the sewers of Hydlaa. He had finally made the long journey from his home town to this big city to make his fortune. The Enkidukai smiled as he pulled a short sword from the body of the dead rat. He hated rodents... probably more than most Enkidukai would, his mother said he had always been that way and he had to agree.

After several hours the hunter made his way out of the sewers carrying a great many rat skins, tails, and eyes and prepared to sell his newly aquired wares to the local tanner, as he had done in his home town.

He looked...

He asked around...

And finally he realised something... Nobody buys rat hides in Hydlaa!

This struck the feline as odd, and wrong in so many ways. Back home, there was alway a market for rat hides. And rat tails were one of his favorite snacks! Sure, the ihabitants of this city may not share his own tastes and fully-acceptable hatred of all things rat-like, but surely they must know that they must have SOME way to motivate people to kill rats... its just the way the world works.

So after a good deal of thought, Orac went to the local bulletin board and posted an ad:

============
HYDLAA - OJAVEDA TRADE

WILL BUY RAT SKINS FOR 5 TRIA EACH

CONSULT ORAC COONE FOR DETAILS
OFTEN NEAR THE SEWER ENTRANCE
OR THE BLACKSMITH IN HYDLAA
(Actual availability may vary)

[also looking for interested employees
prefferably Enkidukai willing to make the trip
from Ojaveda to Hydlaa on a regular basis]

==============

The Enkidukai smiled to himself. With a market like this, he may be able to get some good money... and help kill more rats than ever!

I have to say, that's a great idea, although it kind of eliminates one of the only reason people travel to Oja.

I'll help out, though, since I actually enjoy running back and forth, maybe stopping at Th' Broken Door to chat with Brado and have a mug o' two...

Siteri says: Well, all right... As long as you don't just run in, sell stuff, then run back to Hydlaa, I'll accept it. Stick around for a while, give some business to Toda and the others. Kill some rogues and rats, clean up the town. But I suggest giving people some good reasons to go to Oja as well, just to make up for any potential loss. I really care about that place, you know? I just want the best for them...

Siteri tells you: I just came up with this idea, of making my posts look just like in-game chat. Isn't it cool? I might forget to use it especially if I'm not mixing IC and OOC, but it does make things easier.

The only thing a new player can do : killing rats.
The only thing that's impossible to sell in the city : rat parts.
The only way to sell rats parts : running for thousands kilometers in the middle of nowhere.
The only problem : a noob can't walk more than 100 meters with full inv.

One word : I give up.
I spend hours waiting for being able to walk. I walk for hours in the middle of nowhere, without any idea of the right direction.
Then a rogue come, kill me.

Funny.

If someone told me I could find worst than wow, I would never believe him.
Now I tried PS and I'm convicted.

Just do something about it.

why limit to rat hides when you can do them all? all citizens of hydlaa have the same problem of not having fur merchants nearby, not only those who kill rats. i'd add tefusang and ulbernaut skins to the product list... and maybe traveling merchants might need protection, there are outlaws and thieves in yliakum, you know? lukily, there're also a police force and bounty hunters...

I agree with Zhai, be a trader of all hides. Of course, the sellers of hides would have to sacrifice a tria or two for getting lower prices than what's offered in Ojaveda, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Hello everyone. Heh, I had posted this a while ago when I was pretty new and just managed to find my way to Hydlaa from Oja. I've since found other more profitable ways to get tria and now have enough to start a guild if need be.

Anyway, I am still doing a little hide trade on the side. and have added tefusang hides to my list. The main reason I started is because it seems difficult for new players to make money in Hydlaa on their own since you can't sell hides there. [okay you can sell tails and eyes... but it seems nice for me to buy some items from new players so they can make some money] I am pondering the idea of making a guild of some sort to kind of go with this idea, but expanded a little.

Ideas:
Hydlaa - Ojaveda Trade Guild- A guild dedicated to increasing econoimic growth and traffic to Oja.

Namely:

Setting up a trade route between the two cities and helping new players find their way

Allowing the hides normally discarded in Hydlaa to find a use [namely lining tria in your purse]

Helping to train players in the art of mining and metallury to make use of the newly found mines near Ojaveda

And finally, training new and inexperienced members in the way of defending against the monsters that they may meet in Oja or on the way to Hydlaa.

=========

If enough people show an interest in joining, I may start the guild. I'm not really experienced with web pages though... and I may want to decide on a better name.

Why don't you just call it the Merchant's Guild? Much less of a mouthfull. ;) It's a very creative idea, since I haven't seen any guilds yet that have to do with economy or trade. I just quit my guild, though, so I'm not really too interested, but I'm still willing to help out.

I think that is a great idea, and would be interested in joining.

The Merchant's Guild sounds like the best name to me--it allows for expansion into other areas of trade later, as new areas in the world are discovered. Also, it is easier to say and remember, as the other fellow mentioned.

Please tell me your real name, The Shadow Nose. My name is actually Dwyrdorn, just like my alias.

[OOC: I can make and host a website, if you'd like--maybe running Joomla or phpnuke. I don't have time to design anything new (I do freelance webdesign when I have the time), but I could just find some cool looking premade theme. If it gets rolling, I might find time to make some nice custom design. At any rate, I can host a site.]

This is not a bad idea.  But one question if you start doing it is, if business is good, how many hides can you carry?  If you are quite new that might be a problem.  I can see people giving you great stacks and it might not take long for your inventory (weight) to fill up.  You will definitely need a few employees to be 'runners', constantly making the journey while you do business.  And it looks like they recently tweaked stamina again, which will make the trek even longer.

I hope it works out...best of luck!

UPDATE:
This post was made when I was pretty new, I think my strength was at 70 or something and I was mainly trying to help my fellow Newbies out in Hydlaa. Since then I got interested in tefusang skins and mining.

Currently, I have 101 strength and a level 10 in metallurgy. I make a decent amount of cash by mining ore and turning it to steel. I also help by buying molten iron and turning it to ingots to sell. I also help people train by turing molten ore to ingots so they can melt them again to learn. It helps out and I make decent money. I keep weight down by focusing heavily on melee combat, no weapons to worry about.

Just joined another Merchant guild called "Merchants of Light" and I work to make steel mainly. Once the metal rush is over and leather working is available I might go back into the hide trade. Though I may try first to find a way to make gold bars or set up a system to get more money out of ores. I'm currently running business in Hylaa because my combat skills aren't good enough to fend off the rogues that haunt Ojaveda.

I may make some treks back to Oja to train and such in the near future and will see about loading up on hides in Hydlaa before I go.
