Advanced character description options.
« on: September 09, 2006, 07:12:16 pm »
It takes one click to change in and out of armor. However, we all know how difficult it is to change your character description to match. I have a suggestion for this. Instead of describing it, I thought it would be easier just to show and tell using modded menus.

We start with the enlarged window I made with two new buttons:

Click [Upload] for a quick 'change of clothing', such as pulling on travel clothing or armor. This menu will pop up:

Click the one you wish and your description is rewritten in the window. Then click [Save] to upload it for others to see. If you did some editing ingame and wish to save those changes to your computer for later use, click [Download] and click one of the tabs, or make a new one for that change.

The XML might be similar to the Shortcut file, as such:

<char_descriptions>
    <char0 name="Hyuken">He seems shy at first glance, as his green eyes look at the ground...</char0>
    <char1 name="Hyuken dressed up">Today he is wearing his finest clothing...</char1>
    <char2 name="Hyuken sleeping">....</char2>
    <char3 name="Krook">...
    <char4 name="Krook injured">...
    <char5 name="Krook travel">...
</char_descritpions>

You can also edit that file offline, or even on a comp that does not connect to the net at all. This does several good things:

1. Allows people to put more thought into their descriptions.
2. Makes it sooooooo easy to change. It is horrid to do now with no wordwrap.
3. Relieves unneeded stress on the server as people are not wasting THOUSANDS of hours online trying to edit. Do the math.
4. People will not be standing around 'doing nothing' because of #3.
5. Allows quick changes to match armor or guild changing. Also good for player quests.
6. Makes the dreaded Wipes painless to those with multiple characters and detailed descriptions.
7. You will be able to edit off line, as many people have limited online time.
8. Combined with #7 SPELLCHECK!

You may notice my own description is short and vague in my screenshots. This is because of #2, #6, #7, and #8. Mostly 7.

Changes needed in the server: 0
Changes needed in the client: unknown
Player made mod: possible
I can do it: not possible

I understand there is no wordwrap when you write your description, but... Isn't it present when you examine someone else description?
Under such conditions i would advice to write as normal, hit enter only when you want to start new line in the window others see.
If you have super long lines and because of the word wrap problem you can't see whole line at once, then update your description and check it in your description window to see if it is the way you wanted.
It is annoying, and scrolling through long line is even more annoying. But i really wouldnt like the visual effect of descriptions, when enter wasnt hit at the end of the line, but multiple times somehere in the middle, when your description window is resized.

But upload description from a file is very interesting.

What you can failure tommorow, failure today.

The point of all my ideas is to make things easier. As for the larger window, that is a mod I made weeks ago. You can get it, and the viewing window to match here: http://ps-mc.com/?p=11

Here is the thread with some screenshots: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=14126.30

As to making odd stops in other's windows... *shrugs*
