In-game Languages
« on: March 11, 2003, 04:06:06 pm »
I think it would be a good idea to have different languages for the different races of the game. Of course there would be a common language avaliable to all (english(?)) but if for example a dwarf -player choses to speak dwarven ,only those players with the dwarven language will be able to see what he just said(the other players will see dwarvish- \"rack balin rond pock..\"-). Maybe there should be an option to learn languages from PCs who know the language (and have the teacher job) for a price , or even a quest, depending on the PC teacher. Also it would be good to limit the maximum number of languages a player can learn depending on his inteligence. I think this would help to strengthen the bonds between players of the same race ,or even add to the role-playing f the races (eg : responce of an Elf PC when a dwarf asks him to teach him elvish: -\" I will never teach our noble language to one so short and filthy as a dwarf...\" :)  )

hope you like my idea, so the developers will put it in the game...

I don\'t think they should do all of the stuff that has been done before. Instead they should keep aiming for originality. :)

I think something like this is great and would add immensly to the role-playing aspects of the game.  It may have been done before and I\'m sure there are other things to innovate on, but as far as immersion into the role-playing aspects, I think its great.

i don\'t like the idea that only certain characters can understand each other.  I like the idea of languages but written only. speaking lets keep it the same

As I said in the last one, I like this idea.  The reason for that is because it would be like the /tell command or the one where you talk to your guild...except your talking to a different group (your race) and instead of just shouting in your head it fits in the game.  It would also help guilds like Valfaran\'s find new members without annoying other people

um... before we jump to conclusions and say that it makes sense and therefore should be done, let\'s look at the situation in the game.  There are 8+ races of humaniods living in one city for many (possibly) many generations.  There is a lot of interbreeding between them.  I think all that would be left of original languages, if they had them (apparently they had little trouble communicating when they first interacted) would be accents or dialects, which could be programmed into the language that the npc\'s use, and could then be picked up by the characters, if they wished so.  If you want to roleplay, you may want to use these dialects or make codes that only your guild knows, like a thief\'s cant or such.  As with such dialects (such as cockney in our world) it is very hard to understand.

Unfortunately, accents are a whole lot easier to decipher when written down than if it were just spoken, so it may be used mostly for roleplaying and not for giving secret messages.

I\'m sorry if this post is badly put together.  Concussion I head have in.

I must say I support this idea, I\'ve thought about it before and it would add a lot of realism and feeling into the game.
This has been done before? In which game? Even if it has been done before that doesn\'t matter because the idea is great.
