Is this a bug? I'm not sure...

OK so this seems weird to me, but I don't have enough experience yet to know if it is really a bug.  I've only played about 3 times. 

Well, the first time I played I went into the sewers and killed some rats and gobbles.  I didn't seem to be taking any damage, but it was a new game to me, so maybe that's the way it was supposed to be.

The next day I played, killed some rats, and rogues, and noticed that I was taking damage while I was fighting them.

Played again last night, mostly killed rogues, and noticed I wasn't taking damage again.

Is this a bug?  Or am I missing something?

There's a program that controls all the NPCs (Non-Player-Characters), when that so-called NPCclient is being weird, the NPCs don't deal damage for example. It happens sometimes and it's fairly normal.
