Looks to me like you just need to run xgamma to brighten up the display. Mine is very dark too so typically I'll run xgamma -gamma 1.8 you can try different values. Alternatively, you might be able to use krandr to set the gamma correction in a visual manner. It has a greyscale bar that you use, when you can see all the separate stages you have found the proper setting.
Hmm, having taken my own advice it now seems like it might not be your probiem Is your screen to dark or are you missing some textures, I can't quit tell.
I wouldn't worry about the "up" failing, I get that all the time.
