Oh a weekend without PS....
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:26:48 pm »
I just downloaded PS for the first time about a week ago and I am becoming addicted to the game.  ( not because the npc server is down and i have to mine for hours to get pps and get through my quest lol , but because the game itself is sucking me in , in a way that Diablo never did.) I find this game to have a much better community of citizens and advisors than Diablo.  People to put hacked items in the trade screen just to trick you and get the item that they want. They take , craft, and give additional advise just so that you can do your quest and help others in the future that everyone knows will need a little help sometime.

So obviously when i came back to my parents house for the weekend ( Momma Duke's Bday ) the first thing i did was hop on the computer to download PS. Wellllll...... you know old people , they never have enough RAM !!! lol all i needed was another 128 Ram and i was on my way into the world of PS .... Now i get the run time error and i know that it is because the system requirements are not being met... So I sit here and wonder if Danablo needs more metallurgy , or perhaps some strenght , endurance.... Whatever he may need I know one thing for sure ..... He aint gettin it till Monday  lol ...

I ask that people respond to this not just to relate to my dilema ( oh yea so hard to go 3 days without a video game ) but to also speak a little on player creation , what you think are the more important things to choose when using the CP as you create your characters... My problem is that I think that I could have chose a better occupation for my parents, or better things from my childhood relating to  what it is that I want to do with my character .... Please give some input guys and have fun in the PS world while I read message boards all weekend !!!

Indeed any starting player should play with the creation system to see how to get the abilities to mach their perceived role in the universe, this is the only way to get some skills that are not implemented. Another way to go though is to ignore the skills that are not implemented and try to max the one you will be able to improve to reduce training time. A third way is to just go with a randomly generated character to get in game quicker as tweaking the system can be quite time consuming.

Wow, sucks to be you :P

But your parents and childhood events only really relate to skills, and personally I think the whole system's stupid and very limiting. You have one childhood hobby, your parents have one job each their whole life, and your past is determined by 'CharPoints'. (Plus some of it makes no sense - Ravens on your house give you dark magic? Becoming a gymnast makes you stupider? etc.)

Besides, it would be weird with practically every person saying they were 'cook's assistants' and 'fell in love with a thief' and got beaten a lot.

Just edit your character description and remove that stuff ;)

  • No system can compensate lack of common sense.

It does make some sense. The ravens are of course one of the more obscure examples, as the association of "raven"="bad/death/etc." is completely arbitrary. Some cultures might very well associate ravens with the opposite concepts, or nothing at all. Still, in a magical world it could be that ravens tend to be attracted to births of dark mages.

However, the hobby you indulge in certainly affects how you develop as a whole, so it can be said that if you focus on gymnastics, you neglect furthering your intellect and thus remain (not become) "dumber", just like the math puzzle enthusiast will neglect their physical development. Obviously there can be exceptions, but those are not commonplace.

Anyway, we all know that the CC is there in order to hide numbers. It can also serve as inspiration, and to get a general idea of the mood of PS. Also, it may be completely ignored if you have a different background in mind (as long as that ties in neatly with the settings, that is).

Seeing the amount of duelling ingame, the last part certainly seems realistic. What I find most amusing about the CC, though, is the idea of a significant number of people being born during a crystal eclipse. ;)

Edit: If you are actually asking for what to select in order to maximise skill X or stat Y, then I don't know. I didn't memorise the effects of the selections, and they may very well have changed since I made my char. It usually boils down to a few hours of experimentation, as has been stated.

Also, whatever you end up selecting, you should remove it from the description in any case, since none of that can be known by looking at your character. Replace it by a general description of your character, which doesn't need to be detailed or long.

I didn't think Ravens even existed in Yliakum. And even still, it just struck me as an odd way to say 'you now have level 3 dark way'.

And that 'gymnastics makes you stupider' thing is purely hypothetical. If you read books while performing gymnastics, it would make you smarter. If an airplane crashed into the gym hall while performing gymnastics, it would kill you. I don't get why every single person in PS who ever does gymnastics automatically neglects their study. And why doesn't it effect your agility? I would equate agility with gymnastics more than strength...

And that's not even going into why being born in a certain month would effect your abilities, or why having a famous parent would make you better at his/her skill, not worse. (Because famous people are too busy to sit down and teach their child, or at least more busy than the poor worker who's been training their son/daughter to take over the business since they were 5...)

And all the other stuff. It just strikes me as stupid...
