Delete All Quest History
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:57:47 am »
A function of some sort to completely wipe all quest history.

a) It would help some who are in a catch-22 situation with the winch quest [PM me if you want details - but the inability to discard some quests now makes other quests impossible to complete!!!]

b) It would be helpful to testers in general in case there are conflicts and other problems with quests in the future. (what's the likelihood?!)

c) Sometimes players lose what they are supposed to receive from quests because of a server-crash (for instance, when they are selecting their reward... this would allow them to start from scratch so that they don't miss out on anything in the game simply because of server issues.)

It probably wouldn't be necessary in the final release of the game but it would certainly help questers and testers in the interim until the conflicts and bugs with quests are eradicated.

Giving such a function to players would probably do more harm than good. Yes, it's known some people still can't get into the Winch, and that's being worked on, but allowing people to wipe their own quest history means they can continually do so to reap the rewards of one-time quests multiple times.

I do wonder about quest timeouts. Do quests time out or can they ALL be picked up after any arbitrarily long period? I got the emporium raid 5-6 months ago and am not sure I can still complete it. I tried to delete it but that did not seem to work either. I have noticed that the npcs seem to be able to respond to only one quest at a time so if you have them for multiple quests you have to figure out which one they are ready for. Is that an accurate impression?

As far as quest wipes the best quest wipe is a new character :'( I would think that is the only way to guarantee a fresh start.

You could give them a temporary lockout from all quests for a set period of time so that people only use it as a last resort.

I'm just thinking as the game expands and more quests are added... there could be similar issues in future.

Just thinking of something to help in case it becomes a recurring problem.

Maybe have it so GMs can do the deed? The player asks, and the GM can look at the players invetory to see if they have the reward already and decide. Obviously there will be players that try to abuse it but make it a banable offence, more work for GMs? Then get more GMs  ::).

I would rather see a fix then have the gms get more work you guys just need to wait a bit the devs are working on this and they will get fixes into the game as soon as they can.

They're putting in a fix for all future potential problems with quests too?

How so?

(my suggestion isn't purely winch-related, it relates to all conflicts, bugs, etc. with the questing system that we are likely to encounter in future.)

If you want to know what they are coding become a dev and start to code some of it

I think instead of putting effort into building systems to get around bugs, our coders would rather concentrate on fixing those bugs themselves. And yes, all problems with quests will be taken care of in the future :)

Caarrie I wasn't asking what they're coding, I was pointing out that they CANNOT fix the full problem (points B & C in my first post).

My point is, they cannot fix things that haven't occurred yet, so it is impossible for them to put in a fix for the larger issue here... It seems some of you are inferring that I was only suggesting this purely as a resolution to the Winch-access related quests... I'm not, this is for all quest bugs/conflicts/crashes/etc that can occur in future too... and I doubt you'll find a developer who is willing to stake their reputation on being able to write this magical code to guarantee an end to all future conflicts/bugs/etc on quests.

A button in the client UI (or even a /command) that send one simple string of bytes to the server... and the server effectively performing one (or a couple) of SQL DELETE statements upon receipt of that... shouldn't take that much effort to build.

If I was to program this for you and put in a lock-out to stop mis-use... would the devs consider implementing it? (I'm guessing not... but I might as well ask!)

What lock-out would you propose, Drah?

the system you propose seems to beopen to absuse Drah, people completing quests then giving someone else the reward or passing it to an alt is whot springs to mind immediately.

Maybe if the suggested function actually checked the database to see if the reward had actually been given to that player at all would be a better soloution.

JUST so you know how it works at moment. Player reports a quest not working, ether petition or tells, Petition is best.
1. Reply to Petition or tells, find out were it is going wrong.
2. Gm then tests quest.
3. Get to point of reported problem, try all ways to solve problem.
4. IF same as player you are stuck at this point, report to Dev.
5. Dev looks at problem, in most cases it can be fixed shortly, [hummer note not soon[tm] ]
6. Fix is implemented, will take effect from next server reboot or crash.

Are you really wanting all quests wiped, and have to do all over again ? get me this get me that do this do that run hear run there, having completed over 80 on my player, I do not want to do them all again, because I am having problems with one.
Run your permissions at least once a week. You will be amazed what it can solve.

Drah when I read this it told me you wanted to know how the devs are planning on fixing this problem. ^^

As far as I know the devs will work on fixing the problem that affects all quests to keep people from getting them again if they discard them because of a bug and they did not finish them and they are a one time only quest. Then if the setting devs make a new type of quest totally different from what they have now and it causes another problem the engine devs will do what is needed to fix any problems that come. I personally dont think any dev will know what the future will bring and we will always have problems ingame that will have to wait for a fix by a dev to be made and added to laanx. So again we all wait and will see what type of quests come up in the future and see what bugs it might cause or have fixed.

There will always be a timeout and a lockout on all quests in some way and personally i dont ever see a way a gm or anyone else will be able to override that lockout for a player. There is no way to track if you got a reward for a quest unless you have it in your inventory and we dont have a way as a gm to track items to see who has had them to determine if we can over ride a quest lockout for someone and then we would also need to do an ip look up for each person that asked, and that would lag the server just to see if this player has the quest item in another character on another account, this is given the gm even knows what the reward is for that quest. With the new system of not being able to discard a one time only quest from either side of the quest book would make it so that in the future this idea would not be needed if this code is kept. You would have the ability to get the quest if it is not in your quest book and if the server sees it there you would not get it.

Well... thanks for the responses... I've submitted a petition covering 2 issues that are present right now (A Kran with a love of Talad and someone who needs a badge but can't get it because the quest to get it is unrepeatable and it's one you can no longer discard!!)

As a player, I'm very disheartened that my main character still cannot proceed with a few of the quests.

As a tester, I'm slightly disappointed that I've ran out of things to test... without dragging an alt through all those quests again!!

I guess taking a break from PS wouldn't be such a bad thing. ;)
