The counsel of the Wizard

.:.  1   .:.

Eleram puts his notebook in his bag as he enters the tavern. He wears the robes of the bureaucrats and carries some scrolls in a bag. The Dermorian, in his late twenties, seems to be of certain importance in the public office given the ornaments he bares. He looks around the almost empty tavern with frustration.

- Darn! I've missed him again...

- Uh?- a fenki named Gaian says.

- Hmmm... Maybe you can help me, milady. I am looking for a wizard who frequents this tavern. Maybe you've heard of him?

- Do you know his name, sir?

- Indeed. He's known as Phinehas Krell.

- Uhm, of what race?- she asks.

- He's a Lemur - Eleram replies- A... crippled Lemur...

- Sorry but I don't know him...

Eleram sighs. "Well, he may come in any time as far as I know. You'll probably recognize him for his limp". She hesitates but curiosity takes over after a few seconds of silence:

- May I know why you search him?

- Oh, I am in need of his expertise that is all. For an official business of the Bureau of Justice*.

- If you are one who brings Justice... - she jokes- I will send you my pet with a message if I see this lemur

Eleram smiles: "We do not deal with law enforcement but what happens after criminals are aprehended"

Gaian nods in silence. The Dermorian quickly adds:

- That's why we have guards all over town. Not enough if you ask me...

- Yes... I understand. Good luck with this criminal, then.

- Oh, he is no criminal as far as I know. It's his knowledge I am after. I seek his advice.

Gaian nods again.

- Well, I shall take no more of your time, milady. Thank you for your aid. Oh, and if you see the Lemur, please tell him our offices need to contact him. Thank you again.

Eleram bows politely.

Gaian smiles as she lets out a friendly "No problem", to which Eleram responds  with a nod. He looks down for a couple of seconds, cogitatingly, and then looks up to the fenki, aware of his own manners again: "Farewell, milady".

As he walks down to his office in the library district, a messenger approaches and hands him a note. He reads the note quickly and then writes a name down in his notebook: Einnol Feldorm. He says the name outloud once, making a bystander look up curiously. He leaves the stranger behind with no explanation, quickening the pace as he mutters something.

.:.  2   .:.

Einnol takes a letter from his pocket and looks at the address. The door opens before he can knock. Before him, a young Dermorian appears. Einnol looks at Eleram and asks politely:

- G'day sir. Would this be the Bureau of Justice?

- Sir Feldorm, I presume?- replies the elf with his eyes focused on the note Einnol still has in his hands.

- Aye. - Einnol says, nodding slowly.

- Please do come in. I've been waiting for you.

Eleram takes Einnol to an office, walking past what seem to be normal bureaucratic offices. Eleram's office is not particularly fancy but rather cluttered instead.

- I must admit that I am a bit confused about why I am here - Einnol says as they enter the office.

- Please, have a seat. Can I offer you some water? - Eleram replies. Einnol shakes his head slightly.

- Nay. I just had a mug of ale. Thank you anyway.

Eleram nods and takes out a notebook and a quill. Before taking a seat he walks back to the door.

- Alright, then... - he says as he closes it. From his chair Einnol raises a curious eyebrow.

.:.  3   .:.

The door opens again after an hour. The water pitch is almost empty. At the door, both the dwarf and the elf finish their conversation.

- Tis good to hear that. - says Einnol, still a bit suspicious of the elf's intentions.

- Thank you again for coming. Your help is greatly appreciated- he replies- Do let me know if there's anything I can do for you in return.

Einnol nods once and walks out with a slightly concerned expression on his face. He calls out behind him:

- I certainly will.

Eleram closes the door while Einnol walks himself out the Bureau of Justice and goes back to his desk. The notes he took during the interview are still there. He glances at them. Only one thing is in his mind, another name, another person to find: Hyuken.

*[disclaimer]The name is not official nor does it intend to be. It is just a temporary name meant to refer to whatever office is behind the justice system. Whenever the Settings team releases any new details about Yliakum's Law, the name will probably change to whatever they find most suitable. The RP, though, is based on the assumption that there exists a running judicial system and that citizens are aware of its existance, just as much as the laws. No laws are being created or enforced on others nor will there be such an attempt. In other words, this is just a guy who works for the government, dealing with criminal procedures. [/disclaimer]

Eleram enters the tavern, finding a young menki there. He looks at him briefly, then at a piece of paper with some scrawlings on and finally back at the Enkidukai. It's him. Hyuken grins at a coin in his hand.

- I got five head in a row!

- Excuse me... you wouldn't happen to be Hyuken the bartender, right?- Eleram says, quickly turning to coin for a second.

- Well, I Hyuken all right, but the Boss not hire me back yet.

- Well, good to meet you. My name's Eleram- says the elf.

Hyuken tosses his circle on the table.

- I've been told I could use your help.

- Heads again.- Hyuken grins wide.

Eleram leans forward to see the coin

- Hyuken says: I can help, if I can. Einnol say you looking for me, sir Eleram. Einnol good friend of mine.

- Well, my problem has to do with criminals. I work for the Bureau of Justice, you know? and I'm trying to find a way to fight crime more effectively. I'm sure you've heard all the ill talk about guards not doing anything to arrest criminals... But the truth is our hands are full.- he lowers his voice- don't tell anyone but... our prisons are almost full.

- I say nothing, if you ask.

Eleram remains silent for a few seconds. In the meantime, Duraza looks around the tavern. A fenki named Lanele pours herself a mug of cider. Hyuken finally nods at the whisper.

- Another boring day...- Duraza mutters after letting out a wide yawn.

- ...And I think I have to find a solution before this problem gets out of hand.- adds Eleram.

- Lotsa bad folks about. Make me sad sometime.

- That's why I need your help...

Duraza listens to Eleram and Hyuken's conversation closely but the elf notices and lowers his voice again. In the meantime, Hyuken smiles and nods his head in a goofy way. Eleram starts whispering again. Keeping the conversation to themselves, Eleram and Hyuken remain at the table for several minutes. Eleram nods constantly and takes notes almost compulsively.

The menki pust his hand on the table. The elf leans forward and then looks up at Hyuken's face again. They keep talking. Their voices get lost in the crowded tavern and after a while Eleram takes a satchel that Hyuken carefully placed on the table and puts it away before anyone else can look.

- Sorry...but that all I got. It a little dirty.

- I have to take my leave now. I will let you know what our scholars find out as soon as I can.- Eleram replies, clearing his throat and standing up right after that.- Thank you again, Hyuken. We'll be in touch.

A bow and Eleram is off again, hasting back to his office. All his notes are now in his head, every piece of information collected is now clashing and stirring as he walks. He needs to think but more importantly, he has to contact the wizard.

With the door of his office slightly open, Eleram signs a letter and puts it in an envelope. As he marks it with the seal of the Bureau of Justice on red wax, a secretary knocks and steps in shyly.

- Sir? The messenger is here.

- Oh, thank you. I'm almost done... here. Take it.

The secretary takes the envelope, and looks for the address where it should be sent to. Eleram dismisses the secretary's concern with a quick explanation.

- The messenger knows where to take it.

Startled by his boss, the secretary nods nervously and walks out. The messenger awaits just outside the building.

- Where will you be taking this? - the secretary asks, unable to control his curiosity.

The messenger inspects the young secretary for a few seconds.

- Some group of scholars you don't wanna know about.- she finally says.

The secretary frowns and looks over his shoulder to make sure his boss is not listening. He tries to get more information.

- Scholars?- he asks but there will be no answer as the messenger is already gone. Finally, he mutters:

- Could it be the Imper...?- he stops abruptly as if he'd noticed someone was watching. He looks around the street, feeling observed and in danger, and then enters the building again.

The door of Eleram's office opens. His secretary enteres carrying many scrolls. He places them on the table. Eleram looks at them without looking at the Ylian.

- Are these all?

- No, this is just the first part...- the Ylian replies.

- Good. And the second letter?

- It was sent this morning...

- I see... thank you.

- Er... Sir? What if... there's... no reply this time... either?

Eleram's face turns even more serious as he stares coldly at the Ylian. A slight sign of regret can be seen on the secretary's face yet it's too late to take his words back.

- S... sorry Sir... I didn't... mean...

- Nevermind.

Eleram reaches for the first scroll. He leans back on his chair and starts reading. Knowing his boss well not willing to risk doing something wrong again, the secretary takes his cue and leaves Eleram's office.

After reading only a few lines, Eleram puts the scroll down.

- Very interesting...

[As said before, all the entries posted come from IC interaction (that's why the events reported are far in between). As the thread name may suggest, certain links need to be established before this RP can be open for anyone to join. As soon as some key characters are contacted, there will be more opportunities to join. Key characters have been chosen based on my personal knowledge of their reputation in-game (and my subjective assessment of thier RP skills as players). Since there are so many players out there I haven't met yet and it is not my intention to keep anyone from having the opportunity to get involved, feel free to contact me if you wish to join at this stage (but as I said, there will be more opportunities soon). Stay tuned...]

Eleram and lady Vexonee enter the offices of the Bureau of Justice as they run into Eolas, elder of the Imperial Scholars. After a quick introduction and a few polite exchanges between the parties, they enter the building. For over an hour, the three of them remain involved in a conversation Eleram's secretary fails to overhear. And then, as Eolas and Vexonee leave the Bureau, he fails again in his attempt to catch a word or phrase that may explain their presence in the official building. However, he manages to see the symbol of the Empire, answering one question in his mind, bur raising many others...

- What would he want with the Imperial Scholars?- he mutters - More... research?

.:.  8   .:.

Eleram looks around the tavern as he walks in. He finds a crippled lemur, just like the one he's heard of and after a few seconds of inspection he approaches him.

- Excuse me... could it be that you are Phinehas Krell, the wizard?- He asks.

The wizard sighs slightly before noticing the Dermorian. Then he gives Eleram an uninterested look.

- It's quite possible. Who are you?

- The name's Eleram, Eleram Aendar, from the Bureau of Justice.

Phinehas raises an eyebrow.

- The bureau of justice? Interesting...

- Sir, I need you to review a concept, I beliave it is in your area of expertise, when you have the time, of course.- a voice says. Eleram turns to find Irick, who has approached the wizard as they were introducing themselves. Phinehas nods to Irick.

- Give me a few moments with this man, Irick and my attention will be all yours.- he says, as Eleram turns to the menki and nods politely. Irick bows slightly in return.

- So, Eleram, what exactly is your position with the Bureau?

- I'm the Director of the Hydlaa Offices, not a particularly high position but not a petty one either- Eleram says, as he takes out his official credentials and shows them to the wizard.

Phinehas takes the papers and as he's about to say something a friendly voice interrupts the conversation again.

- Sir Eleram! It good to see you again. How go your quest?- Hyuken grins and nods at Irick as well.

- Hello, good citizen- Eleram replies with a smile. From a table nearby, Irick nods back.

Dismissing the menki's interruption, Phinehas raises the credentials and looks them over

- How terribly fascinating.- he comments, handing them back. Eleram takes the credentials and puts them away.

Hyuken puts an old mug on the table and fondly fills it with water from a skin.

- So tell me, what exactly does your position entail?- the wizard inquires as he shifts his weight to his cane.

- I'm in charge of overseeing judicial processes in the area... among other things.- Eleram says.

- Sounds like a position that could earn you a lot of enemies.

- It has, but it also allows me to be well connected.

The voice of the wizard seems less bored with the small talk now.

- I can imagine.- he says- So what sort of things have you been involved in recently?

- Trying to find a more efficient way to put away criminals, mostly...- says the Dermorian.

- Hmm... That could be interesting.- Phinehas replies.

- Difficult too. There are many things to consider as you may know.

- Of course, I'm fairly aware of the difficulties. From both sides.

- Hopefully all this hard work will soon lead to some changes.

- That would be desirable.

- It just takes patience and determination, I have learnt.

- Of course, anything worth achieving does.

- Indeed.

- Well Eleram -Phinehas finally says-, if you'll forgive me, Irick needs my attention for a while...

- Of course. It was nice to make your acquaintance. I'm sure we'll have other opportunities to talk.

- I'm sure.- the Lemur says, nodding to Eleram as the candle wax stops suddenly in the air a few inches from him and falls to the ground. Eleram nods back and leaves Phinehas to his business, knowing he is aware of the task negotiated earlier with Eolas and Vexonee.

Later in his office he'll go over the names he's taken note of as his investigation progressed, writing them down in a particular way. He doesn't hesitate to add his own name:

:.:.:.:.: Eleram :.:.:.:.: Einnol :.:.:.:.: Hyuken :.:.:.:.: Vexonee :.:.:.:.: Eolas :.:.:.:.: Phinehas :.:.:.:.:

"It's all falling into place", he tells himself, slowly putting the quill down for the day.
