hi all!

many seem to have graphics problems, but i didnt find sth like my problem in the forums:
does anyone else have a screen like this after entering the world? (attempting to play for 1st time)

http://mz-screenshots.blogspot.com

opening the GUIs and interacting with them seems to work just fine.

my specs are kubuntu 7.04, intel pentium m 1,5ghz, intel 855pm chipset, ati mobility radeon 9700/64mb vram, 512mb ram.

any ideas what might be the problem/how to solve it? i want to get addicted to a game again...

thx - spacecat

Open a command prompt - on kubuntu its called Konsole.  Once in the command line enter the following command:

Code: [Select]
glxinfo | grep direct
This will return one of two things: Either:

Code: [Select]
direct rendering: Yes
or

Code: [Select]
direct rendering: No
If the command returns  No then try getting the correct 3d drivers installed or debugged.  If it says yes then there is a different problem at stake.  Please post back whether or not direct rendering is enabled, and then post your system specs, including video card.

We'll go from there and see if we can help :)

hi induane!

[off topic] before anything else i want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. there were 2 problems i could fix before this thing thanks to your replies in other threads.

ok, back to topic:

direct rendering seems to be enabled, it says:

spacecat@spacecat-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

concerning the specs, i thought i posted them already, well here they are again:

kubuntu 7.04, intel pentium m 1,5ghz, intel 855pm chipset, ati mobility radeon 9700/64mb vram, 512mb ram.

is anything missing?

best regards _ spacecat

There have been reports of some bugs in the version of mesa included with ubuntu feisty that affect planeshift.  Are you using the built in X drivers or did you install the proprietary driver from ati?  If you did, more than likely you saw some reference to fglrx when installing it.  Ubuntu Feisty has a restricted drivers manager located in System ----> Administration ----> Restricted Drivers Manager

Open that program and it will tell you if the ATI driver is in use or not.  If it is not you could try enabling it there if you see the option (be careful though, I am not positive this won't hose X - if it does it isn't hard to fix but I just wanted you to be aware that the possibility exists when enabling the restricted ATI driver.  You can try enabling it, then if something goes terribly wrong, just enter the following command after you login in the command line (if X fails to launch you will eventually get dumped to a command prompt after some funny looking warning screens).  IF for some reason this happens you can fix it by entering the command:

Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
And follow the onscreen instructions.  You can go with default options mostly on it.  Don't forget to choose what resolutions you wish to have available when that part of the setup comes up.

Good luck!

greetings induane.

allright, i installed the proprietary ati-driver and that fixed the graphics problem. thanks for that one.
so i got to play and noticed that the further i proceed from my starting point (after getting killed) the slower the client reacts to anything i do, meaning mouse movements/clicks as well as typing/using keyboard. i figured that playing on xubuntu instead of kubuntu would help, but it seems the same. my internetconnection is a dsl, so that shouldnt be a problem; but can it be that my notebookspecs are simply too small for this game? i mean, it just fulfills the minimum requirements. so, is there anything i can change in the ps-setup or anything else to use as little of cpu as possible? (in fact it uses the whole 100%)

all the best

spacecat

EDIT: oh, and after, say 10min of dabbling around in the game it says 'connection lost-try again in 5min' or sth like that. however that should be a server's issue i guess? it just happened to occur each time i tried to play (since yesterday three times), thats why i report it.

Yesterday was particularly unstable as far as the server goes. For the other you could go into the setup program and turn all the textures down. There is a slider bar in the middle right under the relight panel, least textures is all the way to the right.
