Poll

How have the in-game books affected your roleplay experience (naming conventions, new aspects of Yliakum life, etc.)?

Very much so! I use them a lot!
It helps a little. I use them to learn names and such.
Not at all. I don't RP using any book info.
There are books?
My character doesn't read, so I can't roleplay using that info.

I treat books as a cannon source of information but I still call it the first level.  Going outside of the settings is distasteful (ie chickens) but I think there can be a reasonable and IC compromise between player generated content and what the settings team members come up with.

Just wanted to comment on the bottom Poll option:

"My character doesn't read so I can't roleplay using that info."

This might be true to a degree but I also think that a large portion of that information being stored in books is common knowledge for everyone living in that day and age. I think of the book on Yliakum Law or the geography books then. Everyone living in Yliakum would know most of that information without ever having to read those books. It's something that is passed on through your character's upbringing or simply through experience. So not being able to read doesn't mean your character should be completely oblivient towards the information Settings shares with us through in-game books.

The library books both in DR and jayose's library have much important information I once knew a certain *ahem* someone who believed DR was completely an ooc realm, I knew different but had no real proof until these books came around. Also to law of yliakum book, is great for us 'bad guys' as now there is a punishment for such crimes we commit. It also fills in many plot holes that players needed explained. Great job settings team!

It was more of a comedy option, actually. No need to take it too seriously. :)

Earl_Listbard: I'm glad you enjoy the books...but don't forget there is a third collection. I'll leave it to you to figure out where it is.  :detective:

Well, if by some unfortunate circumstance you do die, it might be worth your while to check.  :detective:

You were right, of course... just, there could be more different authors. ;)

I've been reading some of the new books.  I'm enjoying them, especially the trend they have of being sympathetic to the natural world.

My character is an academic, it's his business to check up on the library. I've read all the books several times, it definatly improves my RPing

I have to admit, most of my trips to the library to read up have been "inspired" by quests.  One of these days I need to stop by and do some thorough reading.  As more books are introduced, I too would like to see better labeling so you don't have to go around clicking everything to see if something pops up.  Now it seems so random.  All in good time, though, I'm sure.   :)

I would like to see more geography books and language books.  Especially things that backup or elaborate on what NPCs already hint at...other cities or locations that are not ingame yet.  That might be a slippery slope for the settings team, though.  I'm sure they don't want to give too much away yet.   :D

Anyway, good job with the books.  I look forward to the day every shelf has books on it.

Actually, quite the opposite. It's our hope that in the future, when new areas are created there will already be information about them, and perhaps people have already roleplayed them as their hometowns. But of course, it's much easier to get NPCs to talk about them first, before a book goes in.
