constant crashing in popuated areas
« on: November 11, 2007, 02:33:32 am »
---------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT!  Probem seems to be solved.  Between my CPU heatsink and fan was a major dust blockage.  CPU thermal warning was shut off in the bios (must've missed that setting after a battery change).

The added CPU load from all the players around me was overheating my uncooled processor, but when no one was around it must've been running cool enough.
My other games must simply be using more GPU than CPU.

I stayed in the plaza long enough to pound my steel into worthless chunks of twisted metal...  I think we can close this one.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Did not have this problem in v19.

I log in, grab my steel from the forge, and start pounding on the anvil.  Crash.
I log in, put my steel in the forge, and crash.
It doesn't matter if i'm using the equipment or not.  In either the plaza or Oja forge, psclient has about a 20 second life expectancy.
Doesn't matter if i'm working, standing, siutting, walking, running (and/or turning).

I can go into the wild or into the Laanx mines and stay logged in indefinitey as long as others aren't around.
If people(s) come down and mine next to me in the Laanx mines, no problem.  I can mine till i'm blue in the face.
If we (or they) start conversing, I crash.
I can be in the wilderness with others safely as long as no one is talking.

Trying to solve this problem, I have:
>repartitioned, formatted and re-installed windows 2000, this time with sp4.
>upgrded all drivers that i could.
>tried different resolutions
>tried using sound / no sound in PS.
>tried many different combos in the setup window, including skins.
>disabled my chat log
>disabled flashing tabs, all auto tab switching, and colored chat window names.
>re-enabled my chat log
>thourough scandisk.
>upgraded my cable internet speed.
>changed firewalls.
>rebuilt my networking components
>tried using my other NIC
>rebuilt my networking components
>re-installed my new firewall.
>re-downoaded and re-installed PlaneShift (using no-grass maps).
>re-tried most of the above.
>repartitioned, formatted and re-installed windows 2000, again with sp4.
>re-installed latest downoad of PlaneShift.

None of the above seemed to make any improvements.

It should be noted that after a crash, while PS server is still sending me packets, ps client is highly unstable even on the 'ping' screen.
I have to wait untill my ghost times out or psclient will most likely crash before i can log in again.
This applies even after a restart of windows (I boot fast).

I am out of ideas.  Other people do not seem to be having this problem.
My system is clean, and the problem -seems- to be related to people chatting around me, but I can't be sure.

Specs:
AMD Athalon 64 FX-51 2.2Ghz uniprocessor
Nvidia NForce 250 chipset
SII 3512 SATARaid running striped array
Nvidia Nforce networking controller (10/100)
Realtek rtl8169/8110 gigabit nic
Nvidia GeForce 7800gs vidcard (AGP 8x)
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound

Any thoughts?

laters,
