Item Stack Averaging
« on: May 11, 2008, 11:25:10 pm »
Well, this (i thought bug) incident happened to me about a week ago:

I had two ~q200 daggers and one ~q100 dagger. I stacked them together and the qualities averaged to give me three ~q167 daggers. I asked a couple guildies and they told me it was a bug that had happened before but was apparently fixed. So, upon hearing confirmation, I reported it to the bugtracker. About a day later, i checked the bugtracker again and it had been closed. The reason stated was "This is not a bug."

My question is, how can this not be a bug? Do weapons just morph into new weapons whenever they are put together? I would have accepted it and said nothing if the answer was something like "Known problem, being worked on.", but to say that this is not a bug got me very confused. So, i ask you, is there any reason for this?

there is no code and as far as i know no code planned, to support stacking of items with different qualities and being able to keep the qualities and not change them at all, yet still be able to select different ones from the stack. So this is not a bug it is a feature and how it works. There is no change to this unless it is planned by a dev and will not be very easy to do, and not something we will see anytime soon.

Are you saying you should've ended up with three Q166 daggers instead of three Q133 daggers?

How they average depends on how they are stacked. At any rate I think adding one 100 to two 200 ought to give you better than 133. Are you sure it wasn't 1 200 and 2 100?

I thought at one point in time that code was added that disallowed items stacking if their quality was too far apart since it could be used as a type of exploit?

I recall reporting this on the old tracker and after some back and forth it was decided that it would require a complete rewrite yet again of the inventory system which just wasn't on. It was actually changed for a while so that items could not be stacked at all if they had different qualities but that was found to be an unsuitable solution so it was set back to the way it is. At least that is how it happened if I did not dream the whole thing. ;) My memory can be a bit spotty at times. I could not find it in the trackers so perhaps the whole conversation happened here.

No, im saying i dont know how i ended up with three daggers that were different from hat i started with.

Okay, so thats just the system. A complete rewrite would be a time-waster. Perhaps this will be fixed in the final release, who knows. Anyways, thanks for the answers. In the future, ill remember not to stack.

My understanding was that the old bug was that the inventory system automatically stacked like items and ignored Q altogether, resulting in changed Q from no intentional action of the player.  My understanding of the fix was that Q was now taken into consideration so that two different Qs were no longer stackable.

Apparently my understanding was wrong. From what you said, you *intentionally* stacked three like items, but with different Qs.  So it appears the fix only applied to *automatic* stacking, but that like items are still stackable when done intentionally.

Not sure if that was the intent (since I can't see a logical IC reason for that behaviour), but it's good to know.  And if it wasn't the intent, then it probably should be a bug.

They still auto-stack also if you use shortcuts to dequip, i've had it happen to my 300Q's when i had some normal looted daggers, used my dequip shortcut, and voila, no more 300Q's, and plus, they had lost the crafters 'tag'.  This has also happend to two other guild members.
...erm...I'm dead?
