The Twins: Aeridus
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:10:50 pm »
Today Aeridus kept his eyes closed when he woke up. Usually, he was always getting ready for the day almost right after he woke up, but last night he had a dream he didn't want to forget. For whatever reason, he dreamed about his twin and his parents. Why had he dreamed about this now? It had been more than fourteen years ago. They had left him. They had taken his twin brother and left him. Why did they leave him? The only thing he knew about it was they had come here a few months after his birth when they had suddenly left with his brother. The elder told him that his brother needed a skilled mage around the time he was left there, it was something about what had happened when his brother was born. He was a sickly child, but the elder said he should consider himself lucky that what happened to his twin hadn't happened to him. He was told the magic hadn't worked and his twin brother had died. What had become of his parents wasn't so clear. Some people said that they died, but these people weren't sure if it was just death. It could have been the True Death. But the more popular answer was that his parents had just left. If they had left why didn't they come back to him!?! He realized there were tears slowly winding down his cheeks, and when he moved to get up, he realized his pillow was wet. As he sat up he angrily wiped away his tears. Why should he be crying about people who didn't care about him enough to come back after his twin had died? He started getting ready for the day.

"Aeridus, where is your mind today! you need to focus!" his instructor said as he slammed a book down in front of Aeridus. Aeridus had been thinking about his dream again for whatever reason. He quickly flung it out of his mind and opened the book to where they had left off. "Now, the ceremony is in a few days. Have you thought about which Way you were going to learn?"
"I was thinking about, maybe, brown way."
His instructor sighs "You need to be sure Aeridus, you'll be studying this the rest of your life, a quite long one it seems it'll be. You've learned the rites haven't you?"
Aeridus smiles at this this "How could I not? You've drilled it into my head everyday since I was ten years old."
His instructer relinquishes a little chuckle at this "I'm glad. We have to make sure to keep the Alliance. It wouldn't do for us to let them down. So you are going to be a Brown Way mage? I need to finish preperations then. Well, you can go for today, and we probably won't have to meet until after the ceremony. Don't forget what you have to do!"
As Aeridus is walking out he turns around with a big smile on his face "Oh, you worry too much. I could probably do it in my sleep, though the water might wake me up."

[more later. Sorry for having this so short :)]

It was barely the day, but it was the day. He got up and prepared himself for the day, and ceremony. He packed a change of clothes and a specially prepared meal, then headed out toward the lake. The lake was a few miles away, and he had to be back at dawn for the ceremony. He took a deep breath of the cool, clean morning air, but then noticed the dark clouds almost in paradox to the air. It was a good sign, it meant more cleansing for him, but he did not relish the idea of walking back in the rain.

He finally arrived at the lake. He hadn't been here in a while, and had remembered it bigger, if only because he was smaller then. He quickly undressed to the waist, then started wading in. The water was chilling. It was all he could do to stop from turning around now. He forced himself deeper into the water, with gritted teeth. He slowly makes his way deeper into the water until he is up to his neck in it, and shivering badly. He takes a deep breath, barely able to though because of the cold, and plunges his head into the dark water. It was like he had entered another world. The cold was almost overwhelming, first pin-and-needling him, then numbing him and turning his limbs into lead. He stayed there to make sure this part of the ceremony was complete. He slowly started to try to lift his head after what seemed like forever, but found he couldn't. His lungs were starting to burn, despite the freezing cold. He started to panic, bubbles streaming out of his mouth and nose now. He fought against the numbness and lead, struggling to bring his head back up. He let out a desperate cry, causing a flurry of bubbles, but his head somehow broke the surface of the dark water. He slowly made his way back to shore, tripping on some rocks on the way and almost falling flat into the water again.

When he makes it back to his bag, it starts raining. He looks up at the clouds when he notices the rain is coming down almost sideways, despite there being little wind. As if he needed any more water. It must be made by magic, but who would have conjured it? They would need to be nearby to affect the weather so and Aeridus did not know any blue mages powerful enough to effect a whole region. He stares at the clouds, puzzled, for a moment more, then shakes his head and heads back to the village, soaked and chilled to the bone.
