Questions on mining

I've been trying to mine for a while, and I keep getting the message "You don't see a good place to dig." Do I need more skill in mining in order to mine at all, or am I just trying to mine the wrong metals?

Perhaps you're not mining in a good location.  If you're looking for a good place to dig, try asking around in game.
