Forum highlights

Hmm... not sure if it's possible but here it goes...

Well, the Guides and Tutorials board is super important for the newcomer, yet it is hidden under a long path (gameplay/newcomers/guides and tutorials), so it's easily missed, especially for new forum users. I remember back in the day in my newbie days it wasn't so easy for me to navigate through the boards to find the FAQ thread and other guides, considering I didn't know much about the game so all those threads about stuff I didn't know were a little intimidating. Eventually I did but perhaps there is a way to link to them from the main page? Yes, I know, there is a link already (as child board of the newbie help board). But even so, it's not easy to see and, given the amount of posts we get about a few recurrent topics despite the fact that they are clearly addressed in stickies and other threads, it would seem that the tiny link is not working that well.

Is there a way to add some more flashy buttons somewhere at the top of the forum home (or any other relevant place)? Maybe have a line just above the boards with links to important threads we don't want anyone to miss, like Game Policies (which will be updated soon), Guides and Tutorials, forum rules, etc. Maybe a series of lined up buttons, 200x100px each or something like that. That way we can draw more attention to those threads we don't want anyone to miss and hopefully make the forum a little more newbie-friendly and avoid duplicate threads.

These are all threads about the same topic: the tutorial. They all got responses with the same links and they were posted at about the same time by different users. See my point? Perhaps a button on the forum home page to the main FAQ's could prevent this to some degree (although there'll always be someone who won't see even if it explodes in his/her face) and more importantly, make it easier for new users to find the information they need.

Our old guild uses DeviantSMF. Should be pretty close to your administration interface. So in Administration...

Theme and Layout Settings
Theme Settings
Click name of theme
Modify the index template. (the main template)

The index template can be modified to include a number of images as links to specific forum destinations.
Make a new theme and work with that in SMF, change the theme setting for the forum after you are sure.

Hope that helps anyway...

There exists a risk of update failure with a modified html structure. If nothing changed, I think Acraig won't like the idea.
That's a reason why i have been working with javascript, but i simply have no time right now.

One thing I think would be a lot more helpful that requires no modification to the code is if people posting links to various threads made them a little more significant.
It does not take a lot more time to use the "url=" format to make the link and then copy/pasting the topic in between the tags. I have certainly been guilty of using "this" or some other non-descriptive description, but if I am in a new place and I see a bunch of that I am less likely to click on them.

For example if I were to link to this thread I might use Forum highlights. It is certainly better than this or http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32563.0 all of which amount to the same thing.

I think that once provided, new users do check the links in whatever form they are presented (mostly). The problem is that they do not use the search function and even when there are 5 other consecutive threads about the same topic they still don't read them before posting.

You know, there may be also a javascript, which will display a huge red info about checking out first "this" "that" and "something else", or be prepared for ignoration everytime a new guy thinks about posting a new topic, or posting at all in help channel ;P

If you want i can make links to specific topics visible right next to logo, for instance being fully visible on mouse hover to not clutter space normally.
