No 3d graphics
« on: July 08, 2008, 07:11:31 pm »
Hello,

I just wanted to srtat playing PS, but I can't see ay 3d data : the program loads world data, but only display the picture shown during loading as background. Menus works quite well, but when I want to close one of them, the picture of the menus stays at the background. My mouse pointer also draws small icons all over the PS screen. See: http://k9.phpnet.org/temp/ps-bug1.png and http://k9.phpnet.org/temp/ps-bug2.png.
When I right-click on some parts of the screen, I have a new menu (an eye and a red cross). I think sometimes I move (when i randomly type on my keyboard), because my HP stat sometimes fall.

Note that I can't see my character (on the login screen) neither.

I'm using the last PS release, on a Fedora 9, x86_64 system, disabling 3D composition on my desktop (it does not change anything anyway).

Should I post my errorlog file ?

Direct rendering seems to be enabled :
Code: [Select]
$ glxinfo  | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

EDIT : And other 3D games work well.

Yea I would post any errors that you are getting, what video card you have, what driver version, etc.
Thats what it looks like when your gpu has nothing to render. Like when you go noclip in a first person shooter and fly outside of the map. So, as I am only 2 days old to this game (I haven't even gotten to attack a rat yet because of npcclient  >:( ), I cant be sure exactly whats going on. But my un-educated guess is something funky is going on with the vertex data that your video card is getting (or not getting).

But yea, post the error(s) please.

yep... same here...

Im running Fedora 9, ATI RADEON 9550 graphics card.

Under GNOME in console I type... glxinfo and receive...

direct rendering: Yes

When I load I can see all Bitmap graphics but anything 3D or Rendered doesn't appear at all. Instead, the windows which should have 3D in them are bleeding other windows through. I tried fiddling with the Setup options, reduced everything to lowest settings, windowed, fullscreen etc but didn't do much. In the character selection screen, there is no Character in the Window and when loading into the game I only see the Floating Windows but no 3d world. I see nothing 3D at all.

Its possible that this could be a missing library or something? Its almost as if OpenGL isn't working and those regions which require rendering just come up transparently blank.

When running in console, all I get is this...

[root@localhost ~]# planeshift
Your configuration files are in... /root/.PlaneShift
DEBUG: Sound System Software Renderer Initializing...

I have no idea if any of that helps or does anything. I don't know where to file it so I'm filing it here.

It looks like the games too buggy to have a look at. Maybe next release.

Some more information to this problem...

I was thinking that _maybe_ I didn't have something installed properly which came with Crystal Space and that if I installed the Fedora Native version of Crystal Space then the libraries would automatically drag along all of the dependencies that may help the situation.

I did:

yum -y install crystalspace-1.2-4.fc9

It dragged a whole bunch of stuff across with it...

xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-173.14.09-1.lvn9
lib3ds-1.3.0-2.fc9
cal3d-0.11.0-6.fc9
alsa-lib-1.0.16-3.fc9
freetype-freeworld-2.3.5-6.lvn9
libjpeg-6b-41.fc9
libXt-1.0.4-5.fc9
libXxf86vm-1.0.1-5.fc9
libXaw-1.0.4-2.fc9
wxGTK-2.8.7-2.fc9
libX11-1.1.4-1.fc9
libpng-2:1.2.29-1.fc9
SDL-1.2.13-3.fc9
libgcc-4.3.0-8
wxGTK-gl-2.8.7-2.fc9
wxBase-2.8.7-2.fc9
cegui-0.5.0b-7.fc9
libvorbis-1:1.2.0-4.fc9
python-libs-2.5.1-26.fc9
libstdc++-4.3.0-8
glibc-2.8-3
libXext-1.0.4-1.fc9
libmng-1.0.9-6.1
ode-0.9-4.fc9
zlib-1.2.3-18.fc9

But its still not working  :whistling:

I installed the Crystal Space Demos package and ran the walktest... that seems to run fine (quite fun actually). I have also run other 3d games on the same machine, same conditions and works fine.

After another attempt, my guess is that its likely to be a fault somewhere in Planeshift itself.

*lol* I did that to ensure it had full privileges for the test, though, I did try with an un-privileged account and same thing happened. So, it made no difference really. It was rather naughty of me.

Last test before I pack it in... I took notice of this error...

***************************************************************************

So? I tried to modify my xorg.conf and added this...

Option "GartSize" "64"

Funnily enough, the OpenGL graphics came back and it worked. It was as slow as can be (1 frame every 5 seconds, unplayable), mouse pointer jerked every 5 secs. The machine Im running is much faster than that.

Anyway, thats as far as I can go... Maybe crystal space and the new xorg don't like each other? I'll have to leave it to someone much smarter than myself. Hopefully I've provided more insight into this bug so someone can follow up on it.

*wow* I just seen a clip to the up and coming crystal space / blender game apricot. Those graphics look mad.

was it previously set to the stated memory size of your graphics card? if not you should set it to that and test it.

[was it previously set to the stated memory size of your graphics card? if not you should set it to that and test it.

Nah, the new xorg has hardly any settings. It autodetects most things and creates its own xorg.conf if you let it. Though, I did try 64, 128 and 256 as settings out of curiosity. I think this card has 128meg. It didn't make much of a difference really. The OpenGL came back but it was unbearably slow and definitely unplayable. There's definitely something funny there. Hmm... I dunno. Its possible that its driver / xorg related, I guess? My question upon that is why does other stuff run? The crystal space walktest ran perfectly and it was really fast too? It had a flame in the test and that rendered almost realtime. Without knowing crystal space or planeshift code I can't say but my gut feeling says its something there. I could be wrong. I don't think this is a driver related issue somehow. Planeshift graphical setting maybe? Config file setting? I don't know how any of that works.

Im not sure what produces that GART error but the walktest didn't show it? Anyway... I have no idea, I can only provide that much.

i think mouse trails like described at the begining of the thread can be caused by having the hardware cursor on if you have hw_cursor in device section comment that out and try adding Option "sw_cursor"

yea im trying to think, cos i had the same error what is in those pics a couple years ago, but cant remember how i fixed it and im sure it was something to do with ATI, though i could be wrong, ovbiously PS being the only thing effected it seems the likely source, but i would not rule everything else out just yet.
i tried playing around with some settings in PS and xorg.conf on my laptop that uses ati but could not reproduce it,
im guessing with fedora 9 its xorg-server 1.3 and ATI 8.5 thats what im using on my distro, with 2.6.25 kernel. when i installed PS on my box the only thing it called for was openal the latest drivers from ATI are 8.6 i have not tested does at all but release notes state a few coruption fixes. (they seem to be updating windows and linux at the same time now days.) if i remember anything i will post back or if i manage to reproduce the error myself.

i know the first one is for 2D but these are what i turnt off in my xorg.conf because they play a part in performance and are new features as of 8.5

Code: [Select]
"XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"    "on"

Code: [Select]
Section "Extensions"
       Option "Composite" "Enable"
       Option "RENDER"  "Enable"
EndSection

of course i left Option "DRI" in place because with out it there would be no direct rendering
