Art gallery
« on: April 12, 2003, 11:44:48 pm »
First off I\'d just like to say that Planeshift is great; the pure attention to detail I really admire.

Anyhow, I was walking through the pub last night and spent some time looking at the pictures.  Then I thought, how about a whole building dedicated for just art??  Just somewhere, like the pub, where you can go and spend some time.  It might be great to even have a Guild Of Artisans that could organise regular exhibitions...

what do you all think?

Good idea! It would be great to see museums in the larger cities. It could be a place where painters and other artists shows their art.
I agree that there should be art-competitions where PCs rates the artists, and in the end of the day, the best artist wins a prize.

I think it\'s a waste of time...;)

Once the game is done most players will be busy to level up and won\'t have and eye for the fine art.

Keep renderings, wallpapers and other artwork to the homepage or the guild pages...

It would take to much memory/disk space and bandwidth anyways. Well, maybe if it contains hints for example about history of PS or other information useful to finish tasks a gallery or a museum are fine, but not if it contains loads of picture data to download....

I like this idea on the surface.  It could be a good way for people to contribute paintings/art to the game as well.   It would be neat to see a player driven museums.

The biggest downside I see at the moment for this idea is this.  How do we a) store this art? b) populate it to the players?  The simple answer to this would be to include it in the map file.

This would then require the player to download the entire map just for a few images.  At the moment the updater is not smart enough to update \'bits\' ( no pun intended for you computer folk :) ) of a file yet.

But as a general idea I think it would be neat. :)

Have you ever played a MMORPG before? Not everybody is XP-hunters you know...

No, it isn\'t the same thing at all. Interactivity is the keyword to every game.

No, if you\'re talking about the pictures it won\'t take up much space to upload them. The pics could be in low-resolution when you\'re walking around in the museum. If you want to see them in high-res you should just have to click on them to see them in high-res.

you could make it so the art gallery wasn\'t in the main game download and if you went to it, it just downloaded
the rooms you went into which saves people who don\'t want to go in there from downloading it

I have to concur.  My main goal in a RPG is not to level like mad - as a matter of fact that sort of game bores me silly.  And I figure, if there are artists in the game, what would be better than to be able to show off their work, or what\'s the point of being an artist at all?

I have absolutely no idea how to implement it however, as I am rather \"tech-less\" but it\'s a lovely thought.

Then again...wouldn\'t such works basically be created very much like weapons or the like would be done?  A sculpture, for example, would take stone and a tool to create something of worth, but I\'m not entirely sure how one would vary the artwork to their own particular composition or style.

You could let people submit sculptures in .3ds format or .gmax format and the best models got into the museam of art that would give me somthing to achieve

oh and if there is an art gallery make the artworks interesting like the Plane Shift splash no artworks like half the artworks you find in real art exibits which consist of pictures made by one artist who made one good picture and then made a whole lot of crummy pictures and managed to flog them of for thousands merely because his name was on them

The Australian art gallery bought a giant white canvas for like 100,000 grand and i bet if i had done it i would have got nothing for it.

hey,

maybe I\'ve misunderstood the type of art you expect to be placed in the galery.

I think an art galery is fine, as long as I don\'t have to download new art 10 minutes long every time I connect, just because of some wallpaper competition placed inside the game...;).

If it can be solved by thumbnails, that don\'t need much space thats cool...8) or if it is ingame art that is of some use or relation to the story.

The other thing kypt14 mentioned would be an alternative. To have separated rooms, where only those interested need to d/l the artwork can rate it or win prizes. It should be stricty separated from the storyline then.

That\'s right. It\'s not about skill, it\'s about fame and money. Well anyway...
You shouldn\'t have to create art in other programs and then import it into the game. The art should be done \"in-game\".
Pics doesn\'t take up much space so the download time won\'t be very long.

EDIT: Umm...keep forgetting about you poor people with 56k modem ;)
Hopefully it doesn\'t exist when this game is released and playable.

I agree with Mehallie;  RPGs are not all about power.  I mean, whats the point of becoming the most powerful being in a world that is empty?

It doesnt necessarily have to be a competition.  It would be great to see paintings (like the Monalisa-Planeshift style), sculptures, and other paintings.  Or even entire skeletons of ancient beasts, never to walk the planet again.

Like you say, perhaps the Art Gallery could be a special building that is only downloaded (interior) if you enter.  That way, if you have a slow connection or your only interested in lev-up then you wouldnt have to take the bandwidth hit.

Perhaps a \"magic\" marker that can mark any object a given colour.  Although, there might be a little problem with graffiti....

Well it\'s a trade, innit?  Isn\'t there a job listed as \"artist\"?  I can\'t imagine that you wouldn\'t bump up in skill the more you studied a job or craft.  My only concern then would be that people would just powergame or macro out some sort of junk just to gain experience points, which rather detracts from a game.
