FAQ, what do you want to see
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:00:03 pm »
In the process of updating the players guide i need to update http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/troubleshooting.html . Please suggest any questions to be added that the answers will not change in each release.

Example question

Where are my logs/screenshots saved on my machine

Some of the questions in the guide will have their answers changed please do not suggest that in this thread. This is also open to the GM team to list common questions they get in petitions that have general answers.

A question that I frequently answer is about server outages or can't connect to server.

It might help to document the port that is used by PS for users behind a firewall. I would also mention checking http://laanx.fragnetics.com/ and possibly even the stats page to verify the server is responding if they cannot connect.

Maybe something about the brightness issue. This questions seems to be frequently asked in the forum and the help channel. You could document how to increase the gamma in you graphic card settings (For linux maybe with "nvidia-settings", kcontrol or by adding a gamma line to your xorg.conf. Sorry, I don't know if ATI or Intel have a similar program like nvidia-settings)

Since this is very system specific i think it is better to keep it on the forum then in the players guide, it is also possible that the lines or instructions could change so then it becomes outdated. I also i have no issues so i have no way to test. I also i have no idea how to use any of those methods myself to give correct directions in using them.

I just wrote it for linux because I have no idea how it works in Windows or MacOS ;). But if you think it's too specific that's fine with me too. (But I think this issue arises in all operating systems). But it was just a suggestion.  ;D

:offtopic: I run linux and MacOS X and i have no issues so i am not sure how many are affected by this, we can always offer support on the forums ;)

A "Where do I find more information?" part would also be important to have, pointing to forum sections, IRC, bug tracker, etc. Perhaps a brief description of each, maybe three questions like:

- How do I use the PS Forums?

- How do I use the Bug Tracker?

- How do I use IRC?

Or something like that...

I am willing to provide links for how to use the forum and the tracker, if there is a link for how to use irc i can do that as well, but i will not put down directions for each irc client as that might change ;)

Thanks for the ideas guys, keep them coming and i will post when i want more info from you all.

I think a brief but specific guide to the forums would be useful. It's easy to get lost when one does not know it well, so directions to the support sections for Mac, Linux problems as well as the Guides and Tutorials area could be helpful, among others.

Sounds very useful, do you have time to write up such a document? if so i would be sure to include it, you do a great job at doing such ;)

I would say some of these could be useful:
-Some starting RP information (such as the three current Dome Vigesmi, or a brief guide to specific important locations that all characters would know within cities, such as the Broken Door or the Laanx Temple)
-I'm not sure if this would be included in the forums guide, but maybe some replies to common issues or complaints, such as topics being locked/duplicate topics, etc
-Some slightly more advanced material, such as necessary information for creating a guild, such as a warning that your guild should serve some RPed purpose and fit in with settings, as well as naming conventions.
-A list of links to other useful topics or stickies for further information on specific topics.

the starting info on rping in ps, aka settings info, is already in the works by the settings team.

There is already some info on guild making and such but i can include more in the final guide.

I think names of known places should be included in the settings info.

A list of links to the forum could be included in the forum info.
