Still no luck with PCLinuxOS2007
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:03:09 am »
My OS is fully up to date, as far as I'm aware. I'm not a Linux expert though, so I could be wrong. (Me? Wrong? Never. Ok, it's been known to happen.... on occasion)

I'm running the following hardware, in case it matters:

MSI K8T Neo2 motherboard
AMD Athlon64 3500+
eVGA NVidia Geforce 7600GS 512MB
1.5 GB Kingston DDR 400 RAM
2x 160GB SATA Seagate Barracuda HDD (SATA1)

PCLinuxOS2007 freshly installed 2 days ago, and updated from recently synced repositories, including the latest kernel.
I've downloaded and installed PlaneShift-v0.4.03-x86.bin. I followed the instructions, using the chmod command on it first, ran the installer as root, so that I could do a system-wide installation, and add icons to the K menu. First thing I noticed is that it didn't add icons to the K menu. I had to find it in /opt/PlaneShift. When I ran ./psupdater, it seemed to update fine, though I'm not really certain about that. After that, I ran ./psclient, and got the following:

Code: [Select]
[loki@localhost PlaneShift]$ ./psclient
Your configuration files are in... /home/loki/.PlaneShift
DEBUG: Initializing OpenAL sound system
DEBUG: Retrieving available devices.
DEBUG: Default OpenAL device: '((sampling-rate 44100) (device '(native))

Minor opcode of failed request:  5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request:  108
Current serial number in output stream:  108
[loki@localhost PlaneShift]$

I really don't know what any of this means, but the game won't run. Aside from root, I have only one user on this system, loki. I've added loki to the games group. When I finish typing this and hit post, I'm going to log out and back in as root, and try running the client. I'll let you know if that changes anything.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I've played the game before, though it's been a few months, and I really liked it. I'd like to be able to play it again.

I will tell you how I got Planeshift working on my fully updated PCLinuxOS 2007 system. I installed the game from the repo, patched the updater as need, then ran said updater. The game ran but I wasn't satisfied because it would crash constantly. I followed the instructions in the post on how to Avoid the Crashes using WINE and now I am entirely content. 8)

Hmmmmmmm... that sounds interesting, but to be honest, I'd have no idea how to patch the updater.

Nevermind. Duh. I found the patch you were referring to, on the downloads page. I'm going to try that, as I'd rather not use WiNE to do it, and I have no desire to install it in Windoze either. I'm about 95% of the way to eliminating my dependence on M$ products.

No luck. I installed 0.4.01 from the PCLOS repos, patched the updater and ran it. First problem is that I couldn't run it from the menu icon, had to do it from a terminal. The updater ran for a couple hours. Every file that it tried to update, it failed due to permissions, and said it was downloading the full version. It always said it was successful at that though. When the updater finished, I launched the game, again from a terminal, and got the same error as above. It leads me to believe that there is an issue with the sound drivers, but I have no idea how to correct it, or if I'm even right on that.

it is never recommended to install ps from a distro repo, you are best to download the full client from the download page and run the updater.

Looks to me like your ALSA sound system isn't configured (or configured wrongly). I don't know the details of your distro, but either there's some alsa.conf file somewhere or you have an alsaconf executable... Perhaps your desktop environment gives you some way to configure sound, too (which might not work to solve the problem, but help to identify it - if for instance you're not using ALSA for the desktop).

It may be that if you are gnomish you are using the pulseaudio soundsystem. Linux has a long way to go in sound system configuration sadly.

Caarrie, the original attempt, using PlaneShift-v0.4.03-x86.bin was downloaded from the Planeshift website's links, not the PCLOS repo. The repo only has 0.4.01. But for the hell of it, I've tried both.

Prolix, not gnomish. Yuck. KDE 3.x.

Zoran, I'm using the default configuration, whatever that may be. I haven't touched it. However, I do have an additional sound-related problem on my system, and that is that while I have sounds in my desktop effects, and sound in Amarok, I have no sound in any media in my web browser. YouTube videos, flash videos, etc, have no sound in them. And I know it's not a hardware problem, because I have a Windoze installation on this computer too, and it all works fine there. Also, in Amarok, mp3 files sound good, but wma files sound..... I don't know.... dirty? Like a dusty vinyl LP.

I would assume that these issues are probably related, but I have no idea where to begin to solve them.

some crappy cards like mine, nvidia onboard ac97, don't behave well if you have multiple sound inputs. If I have sounds in the game no other sounds work and vice-versa. some alsa apps coexist peacefully but not all. Doesn't really help you because the game runs for me even if there is no sound.

I have VIA onboard AC97. I know my hardware, but I don't know Linux well enough to know what the problem is, or how to solve it. 20 years ago, in high school, I could run rings around the teachers using UNIX, while watching those god-awful annoying Steve Ballmer Microshaft commercials for Windoze 2.0. Unfortunately, after high school, I dropped out of the computer race for a few years, and got back into it around the time of the 486dx2 and Windows 3.11. I didn't start using *nix again until about 6 years ago, so I've forgotten way more than I'll probably ever re-learn.

I do prefer penguin power, I just wish it would work more smoothly sometimes.

Apologies for giving incorrect advice. I was simply retelling the method which worked best for me.

I agree with Zoran, it sounds as though your sound system is not correctly configured. Run 'alsaconf' as root to ensure everything is set right, and check the KDE Control Center to make sure the sound system is using ALSA. (fiddling with those settings might also help with your general sound issues). Otherwise, you might ask for assistance on the PCLinuxOS forum.

Meh, I am obviously quite silly. Right after "X Error" it crashes and I somehow think it's a sound issue. Some days I amaze myself.

Nothing wrong with the sound system, these debug messages are normal.

Code: [Select]
X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request:  145 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request:  108
Current serial number in output stream:  108
This seems to be the real cause of the trouble and indicates that X is not happy.

Are nvidia drivers installed?
Does "glxinfo | grep direct" say "direct rendering: Yes"?
PlaneShift Sources

Sorry to hear about your woes Fenrig - i have no game right now due to leaf bug crashes. Try these things and do it in a terminal as you get plenty of debug info like this.

First go to the PS install directory (folder) and do: ./psupdater -repair

If that dont help go into the PS /lib and rename the OpenAL library with an underscore on the front so the game uses the system library.
You can do the same with the other libs in here too - i can run with only the speex library from PS. You do have OpenAL libs installed right?

If your on a 64bit Linux run the 64bit client as all my friends doing this are having no problems where im getting map sticking while walking which is even happening to the mobs chasing me :)
When you have it all working ok then you can run it from the 'pretty little icon' ;)
