Militia

I was thinking about planeshift for no particular reason and was thinking of the law that says everyone should have a minimum training to be able to bear arms. I think that it is an interesting law but you don't really see it reflected to much ingame yet.

So my suggestion would be that beside the guard you also find militia at places. Some militia grounds where everyone can train for example (great exuse to put trainers and start quests there)

It is logical that people need to train somewhere and though the arena is a great place for IC duels and tests of your skills I think it is more realistic if people start their training somewhere less lethal where they can start hitting dummies (Not suggesting the player should actually do that hehe ;) ) and with the law in mind it is also realistic in my eyes that the officials like to have a place where training is given to civilians and where they can be organized in case more then the guard is needed.

I agree with this, it could be called the "Marshalling grounds" or something. Maybe they could even get experience for hitting the dummies. I'll admit, it sucks going around looking for rats to kill and hunting through the tunnels under the temple in Hydlaa (spelling?). I'd like to see some more militaristic areas of the game world and more martial aspects. maybe even sieges of outposts on the fringes of different territories? Just a thought.

It's planned.  The various fortresses exist to repel invasions from the Stone Labyrinths.

Well I definately see that happening if the game ever gets that far *knocks on wood*, but what I am thinking about is more that you have these laws that make things sounds rather militaristic as a society with it being mandatory for everyone to learn weapons and such.

Now I'm not expecting Sparta ;), but if you have such laws it would be realistic there are also places for people to train and where people get organized. The laws make the populations as a whole sound more militaristic then the vibe I get from walking around the cities and talking to NPCs.

Questwise it would also be interesting that you would have to proof yourself as a member of the militia before the guard wants to give you assignments.

Well, we already have a training ground, of sorts.  It's called the arena:)  It's not exactly formal, but we can add an area dummies and guards and trainers etc.

Right, but Garile did bring up the valid point that the arena isn't well suited for educating the general population as to the basics of self-defense and defending the city.  The arena always struck me more as a place for higher-level fighters thinking "hey, lets go kill some monsters/people for the heck of it!" rather than as a government-run facility meant to help the population of Hydlaa fulfill their civic requirement of knowing how to hold a sword and hit something with it (which is what the training grounds would be for).

I would imagine that Garile's government-run training grounds would look like a handful of dirt lots surrounded by low wooden fences, with dried-seaweed-stuffed dummies propped up on wooden poles and some dried-seaweed-stuffed targets for target practice.  On the grounds there would be a storage shed and a small office (for record-keeping), staffed by an older, laid-back, retired general and his younger, aspiring, too-serious-about-his-job assistant.  Every city would probably have some kind of training grounds, though, especially if the requirement [of being able to defend the city when necessary] applies to all cities in Yliakum, so naturally the character of the staff would vary depending on which city's training grounds they were staffing.  (which brings me to my next point below ... )

The laws make the populations as a whole sound more militaristic then the vibe I get from walking around the cities and talking to NPCs.

It would make sense that Hydlaa would seem very non-militaristic despite the law in question, since Hydlaa is probably one of the safest towns in all of Yliakum.  So it makes sense that the citizens (and the staff of the training grounds) wouldn't be very serious about discipline and bearing arms since they wouldn't have as much of a need for it.   Compare that to smaller villages closer to the Bronze Doors, where the residents face a very real danger of being attacked by monsters that slip past the Bronze Door fortresses.
