Computer shuts down and a graphical error
« on: March 15, 2010, 06:28:03 pm »
The first time I tried to run PlaneShift I got to the character creation screen and my computer shut off.  I thought maybe it had overheated so I left it alone for a few hours then came back to try again.  On my second try I got to the login screen and couldn't go any further because every time I would click on a button the window would move.  I closed the program and tried a third time.  This time I got to the login screen and before I could finish typing my username the computer shut off again.  I have tried it several more times and gotten one of those two problems every time.  I was hoping that the native Linux client meant I wouldn't have these sort of problems, but apparently not.

That sounds pretty bad. More information would help, such as system specifications, specific operating system, and where you got the installer from.

I don't know the exact system specs but they should be more than sufficient since it handled WoW fine, I know the graphics card is an Nvidia.  The OS is Ubuntu 9.10.  The installer I used was downloaded directly from the official site.

try running it in a terminal window possibly with the --console and/or the --verbose parameters.
--console probably won't do you much good because you get past the pslaunch, but it might tell you that you need an update.
The updater version should be 2.5, have a look at this thread

--verbose might help in identifying what is going wrong.

You would call the program like so:

planeshift --console --verbose

Another thing that might help is to redirect the standard output into a file although if you are just crashing like that it might get lost.

planeshift >> stnd.txt 2>> err.txt

that will give you two files, stnd.txt a log of standard output, most of the stuff you see in the terminal window and err.txt a log of standard error, mostly unused it seems. You can, of course, change the file names to whatever you want as long as you understand that if it already exists it will append to the file. If you just want to overwrite the file use one > instead of two >>. The number 2 in that command refers to the standard error.

I ran it in the terminal and got a pretty long output that appeared to have several errors in it.  I'm not sure what they mean though...

Ok maybe try without the --console as that seems to just check for an update and then quit.
Was that  what the first part was up to:
Code: [Select]
DEBUG: Closing OpenAL sound system
garrett@garrett-laptop:~$ /opt/PlaneShift/pslaunch --console --verbose
SCF_NOTIFY: registering plugin {unknown} in context `*static*'

Did it crash after that? If that is the case then it may be an openal problem, but at this point it is just a guess.

This thread might be of some use if that is the case. I know when I was looking into my own openal problems most of the posts I found were ubuntu related so if you check their forums you might find some help although it won't likely be planeshift specific.

All the same the description of the problem doesn't match with sound being the problem, you might need to have a look at your system logs as it could be that your mouse resources are conflicting with other subsystems, it might be an ACPI misconfiguration. I seem to recall seeing that window jumping thing before when toying with power management support in the bios and system settings.

Of course I could just be out to lunch :)

I tried the idea in that thread and it didn't seem to change anything.  Before I did that I tried again to run it verbose and I got some more/different messages.  There were a lot of them though so I wasn't going to post it unless you want it.  I don't think it is a mouse thing since the window moving problem seems to disappear when I change it to fullscreen.  Though the mouse is a bit laggy.

As for exactly when it crashes.  It doesn't seem to be completely crashing the computer anymore.  I can get to the login screen but when I click ok to log in it kicks me back to the updater.  I suppose that's better than shutting off my computer though.

I'm not sure I understand how the window could move in fullscreen mode as you don't have a window that can move unless you mean it is the windows (chat, inventory, etc) in the game that move and not the operating system window the game runs in.

You could post the messages on pastebin and just put a link here. Someone might be able to see something it there that means something but maybe not.

Here is the thing from pastebin, hopefully I did it right.

Also, I'm not having the moving problem if I use fullscreen.

It looks like your system doesn't use alsaor something but taht doesn't appear to be the problem what looked significant to me was
Code: [Select]
crystalspace.graphics3d.shadercompiler.xmlshader:
#
Shader 'lighting_default_pvl@@50': Technique with priority 2<46> succeeds!
#
PlaneShift has quit unexpectedly!
but I do not really understand why it continued on from there.

Perhaps you should go on irc, irc.freenode.net server  #planeshift-build channel and try to talk to one of the developers. They might have a better idea about this. Of course not everyone that is there has the same depth of knowledge but they might be able to direct you in the right direction.

Code: [Select]
Unable to start correctly libcurl! is a bit unfortunate but is a known bug. It might be nice if the auto-generated error report was saved to the hard drive when it couldn't be sent but I do not believe it is. That is rather more significant information than is spewed out to the terminal window and it just gets lost on linux.
