I can't even install the game! D:
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:38:44 pm »
Okay, I have read through the stickies about installing the game, and I still can't quite figure it out.  I downloaded the torrent file, and changed it to the .dmg file.  A folder was put onto my desktop, and I opened it.  None of the referenced files in the stickie were in the folder.  The closest were psclient and pslaunch, but they don't work like apparently they should.  When I launch psclient, it immediately crashes before anything happens, and when I launch pslaunch, I can't do anything due to lack of permissions I didn't know I needed.

So, unless there is something I'm missing, I can't do anything.  *sobs*

I don't know much about MacOS X ... but from what I read in many of the previous threads about problems with the game, it may be recommendable to move the installation folder to "Applications".

Not reading previous posts is the most common reason of despair.

As ligH said you have to move the PLaneshift folder form the dmg file and put it in your applications folder. Then run the game from inside your applications folder. The DMG is a disk image file and you have no permissions to write information to the DMG. This is why you get the lack of permissions notice. So move the planeshift folder form the DMG file into your applications folder, then run the pslaunch app and do any updates  if you don't get any notice about an update then use the repair button. After you have updated/repaired then run the game form the psclient app ( for some reason he game has never run on the Mac from the launch app)

Thanks!  I'll try it.

And I did read previous threads, so I must have missed something.

That's the.. 6th.. time someone's done this, is this in the guide for running PS on Mac? If not, it should be... :)

People don't read manuals.

People skip tutorials.

People blame others for being lazy themselves.

People rely on software being smarter than the user.

Sadly, that's a little too true...

and sometimes this conclusion is comlete b*ll***t.

If this game is should reach a professional level one day (the developers want to earn some money - i think they want) there has to be done a lot to the manuals that come with the downloaded package. Also the tutorial and help guide links are outdated. (i read something from 2005). Also wrong names i.e. pslaunche had a different name and stuff like that. There is a list of programm-codes you should change if you have a certain problem. All this is complicaded and confusing and if you do that, you ask yourself if this is still up to date and helps anything. (or crashes the whole computer..)

I think the game lives from a big number of players. You wont get many new players if the manuals are that useless as they are now.
Im working on manuals for indutrial products. They wont sell anything if the manuals have no correct description.
The manual has a high proportion of the final rating of that product.
A manual has to contain a version number and a date of release.

And sometimes a crash in the game turns out to be not the fault of the player or his machine the game is running on..

Not only my opinion.. hope, it helps to improove things.

btw: a player forum is not the right place to get the installation manual because of sentences like above. It was ok if the manuals were ok
but they arent and thats the thing what makes me angry about such pattern.

There really isn't any point to finishing documentation before the software is finished.

1) I wrote statements about some people. Not about all.

2) The game is as much in development as the underlying engine. Users are still more testers than players...

3) The number of dedicated "Testers" is as small as the number of systems they can use to test on.

Everything is not as serious as it may look to some.
