Crash on log in
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:15:49 am »
I've been having this problem with the client crashing when I try to log in. I'll go to the log in screen, type in my email and password, and when I click log in, the music skips, and then stops, and the program crashes. This started after I updated to 0.5.6, but now even 0.5.5 won't work :@#\. Any ideas on what will work? Here's the error log.

Have you tried just running a simple update or repair on your client? Seems as though you don't have a few of the correct files, unless I'm reading the crash log incorrectly...

Try also to delete (better move to another folder) the planeshift-directory, which's subdirectories contain your logs, screenshots etc. I always forget where that is located on Mac.
Doublecheck that it's gone and then make a reinstall of planeshift

Helped in another case afaik. Not on Mac though.

I was getting crashes after i clicked the connect button when I tried to compile own client from sources and then return to official client 0.5.5. In this case it was something in the configuration file planeshift.cfg that was changed with the compiled client. This can be the same problem when you are trying to go back from 0.5.6 to 0.5.5.
Second problem with crashing I got after I updated from 0.5.5 to 0.5.6 but that was already in the fully loaded client. It was caused by the inventory.xml from custom skin, where was changed some things in the new version and the old file is not compatible so I needed to change it to get it working again.
Repair doesn't work in any of these two cases.

I got 0.5.5 working again, but even after moving the directories and can't connect on 0.5.6

Can you connect with 0.5.5? If yes, I'd simply stick to that and try updates from time to time. And maybe someone else had the same problem and found a solution in the meantime...
(I can't say really more to the problem, because I have no Mac and a "Severe" error shouldn't lead to a crash. Only "Fatal")

Zalya, I don't know if you've tried this, but often after I've updated and the client starts crashing on startup, nearly always, this works for me:
Throw away your PlaneShift folder in application support. It's usually here: Libray/Application Support/PlaneShift

Or better yet, what I do is just move it out of there because it has a lot of personal settings that wiil be lost when the client rebuilds a new folder.
If the client does start up after you move that folder, then problem solved. You can then put back things from the original moved folder that you don't want to lose and restart the client again. Most often, the file that has caused me to crash on startup is the planeshift.cfg. I usually move just that file out of there first and try before moving the entire folder.

I've tried that a few times, it didn't work for me.
