Portable forges
« on: April 11, 2011, 10:55:58 pm »
There should be a kind of small forges and quench tanks, which could be placed into guildhouses. With a weight of maybe 400, for example, for forges, a bit less for quench tanks, and small anvils, to forge alone when you don't want anyone to bother you. They could be obtained by events, or given to players after they prove to be good RPers, or whatev's, even buy them from Taemian, Gardr… This kind of smith equipment would have less slots than a normal forge, designed for personal use, with only 8 slots. Of course, not talking about furnaces and stock castings: if you want to smelt, go outside ;D Oh, and of course a normal table with a riveter.

This could be done by even an amateur 3D-artist, in about a few hours, imho. Opinions?

Aside from the obvious issues about heat/smoke being impractical in a guild house... I would LOVE to see something like this as a high-level GM reward.   I know it's probably not practical, but I'd still really like to see the ability to get a forge/furnace addition to a guildhouse.

...then some of us, inside dark houses enlighted by LCDs will roleplay a character who's forging inside dark guild houses warmed by the heat of the forge, instead of breathing the open (!!) air of a plaza... and the wonderful stench of rivnaks...
No way!  ;D ;D

Riveters are available for personal player ownage and use.  I've got one myself, and I've given one to Glaciusor.

I don't think this should be a high-level GM reward. Mainly because only 5 players ever get those.

That said, it'd be smart to have a Guild shop where you could buy assets for you guild, like cooking tables, a forge room, a smith table (or how its called), etc. None of these should be able to be carried outside of the Guild House.

This way it'd be fair, handy and you wouldn't see someone carrying a goddamn furnace with them. Not to mention it'd be an additional tria sinker.

and then the public ones will be dead... the riveter was removed from sold items and won't be given/sold anymore.

Hate to come off as rude but...so?

It's not like having a dozen people standing by Harn's is really helping anything.  It's kind of weird really "I feel like talking with somebody, oh, I know, I'll go stand in the smokey area with all the people banging metal".  Personally, I'd rather the ability to buy extensions to the guildhouse.  There are a bunch of doors that lead nowhere, let these lead to a forge and a kitchen and what not if you pay to unlock them (have them built IC).

I wouldn't want to see something like this become really common, which is why I wouldn't want to see them sold cheaply.  New players do have the option now of going to a forge, and finding people to show them how.

Also, you can find people to repair weapons/armor there and RP that.

but I do notice those unused doors, Elkarway. xD

Well yes, RPing that one scenario and a few others make sense but, just hanging out there (like many do) does not.  And being sold expensively doesn't matter much, needing a guildhouse, though, would keep them rather rare.

I agree. Besides, newbies would still go to the forge, since they rarely have access to  a guild house and some players, even with a guild house, would keep going there to show off.

It's also kinda sad to depend on a forge as a meeting point.

Furnaces and forges are a public service area, there's nothing sad about meeting there.  I think is sad when someone pops out from nowhere right on your feet.
And we depend on forges as a melting point  :P

Aside from the obvious issues about heat/smoke being impractical in a guild house...

Of course, a hole in the ceiling could be RPed. Placing the furnace inside a room, or in a corner… "the sky is the limit" :P

...then some of us, inside dark houses enlighted by LCDs will roleplay a character who's forging inside dark guild houses warmed by the heat of the forge, instead of breathing the open (!!) air of a plaza... and the wonderful stench of rivnaks...

Yes, that was my intention :P Let the grinders be set apart, and the true RPers roleplay in the open forge, for that is the will of the Gods of PlaneShift.

I agree. Besides, newbies would still go to the forge, since they rarely have access to  a guild house and some players, even with a guild house, would keep going there to show off.

And people without a guildhouse, or without a forge at their guildhouse, would still crowd the public forges. And I'm sure a lot of players would be glad to show off. The ones having it in their guildhouses could teach the apprentices, and since these wouldn't have access to the guildhouse (yet), they'd have to go outside to train. It's all thought of :D (or I think it is >.>)

It's also kinda sad to depend on a forge as a meeting point.

I didn't say there was anything sad with meeting there. I said it was sad we depended on it as a meeting point, rather than depending on the tavern. The reasons why this happens are also sad:
  • Fighting's currently the only system (engine, mechanics, whatever) endorsed activity - Food's only useful as far as it can heal, crafting is only useful as far as it makes weapons, stats are only useful as far as they determine duels;
  • There are no RP rewards, specially for anyone who's doesn't RP a fighter or for someone who doesn't want his char to walk around with a staff he earned for doing something against his nature;
  • There is no main plot (i.e. nothing is going on ic).[/url]

    I'm making a wish about this.
