Not able to run PlaneShift v0.5.6 with Ubuntu 10.10
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:22:10 am »
I've downloaded the client about three separate times.  My last download was: PlaneShift-v0.5.6-x86.bin.  I installed system wide, I left user settings as is, I chose Gnome for window manager.  All of that went fine.  After install when I launch however is when things start to take a fowl turn.

First of all, if I choose to run the game from the menu, I get the PlaneShift icon, but the launcher itself is black and it does nothing visible.  When I try to close it, the window persists on my screen and am unable to remove it without rebooting.  I would like to paste the terminal info when I launch if I can find it here: "Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large."  There were several other issues which I saw having to do with graphical interface files such as environment, character sprites, etc.

My system specs are: Motherboard 761GXK8MB Winfast,  AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+,  ATI Radeon X1600 128MB graphics card, and , 2 GB RAM.  I know, sucky.  My desktop resolution is set to 1280x1024.

Could anyone give me some ideas on what the issue could be here?

Hi. Looks like you tried already a lot. Can you paste the full output of the terminal when you start planeshift? ( ./psclient )
.....also a saddle that won't pinch the tail. One day!

Did you try running psclient script directly? And just btw, ATI Radeon sounds like asking for trouble.

Here is what the terminal spit out this time while I was launching PlaneShift via the console:

Overall, I'd say this doesn't look good for me. :( lol  Anyone know what this means?

opensource drivers are not exactly able to handle ps. you might try some of the intel fixes and hope.

Where might I find these fixes?  I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.  Thanks for the reply. :)

Since it's a desktop, I'd really recommend you to get a decent Nvidia card, and avoid the suffering ;) Even PCI Geforce 6200 works with PS. Nothing beats closed Nvidia drivers on Linux for OpenGL support (so far).
