New herb spawns: Uninspired, inconsequent, random
« on: May 28, 2012, 10:17:31 am »
I am checking the new spawn positions of herbs, which have been spread mainly across ojaroad1. And I am quite disappointed. The one who decided about the new positions cannot have put much effort into it. At least he seems not to have much knowledge about botanics, and not much about the description of the items even.

Example 1: There are two positions for White Oak Bark. Under totally different models of trees. Which of those is the "White Oak" now?

Example 2: Hops is lying on flat ground. Have you ever seen hops fields? Can you imagine why they are raised to rank up around threads? They certainly need steep places to climb up.

Example 3: Threestem fruit lays around far away from any tree, although the description mentions "threestem fruit trees".

Example 4: Red Mangrove Leaf grows in a pond as well as on an average meadow. The second is improbable.

Example 5: Wyn Reed used to grow inside the Leaky Rock river, which was logical, as reed. Now it was moved away, why?

As drJack already mentioned in the thread about animals, more efforts have to be expected about herbs as well.

I've been working on finishing a "book" about the various plants and their locations/uses.  I had one before the update, and I've been scouring the maps to update for this second book, and I've noticed a few changes that seemed odd to me as well.

*Golden Ivy Leaf is described as a climbing plant that grows up the sides of buildings or trees, so I expected to see it near one of the outposts or wilderness ruins... and found it in a field.

*Threestem fruit is described as growing on windy slopes of very high mountains and hills... and it's in field for one location and under trees in a field in the other.

LigH, Wyn reed is still found near a water source, just not in the exact same location.
Also, it's more credible to others if you grow in power slowly over time.  First kill rats, then noobs, then klyros, and eventually work your way up to more powerful creatures ~ Miomai

White Oaks are described to grow on high mountains.

And yes, Wyn Reed is still near water, but I believe it could be much closer, at the shore. Like the Red Mangrove Leaves in the Lake of Tears.

I could not yet find Golden Ivy. And I thought I scanned all the five heightfield maps. I just missed Bronze Doors yet...

A few thoughts here, there are no high mountains in Yliakum other than, perhaps, the inaccessible parts of the Bronze doors, however everything on the Dome is high relative to the rest of the levels. It could be that when the path down to the next level is implemented, if ever, that you will find those items there.

Hops could be renamed if they are not terrestrial enough in how they occur in the game, I gather they are meant for brewing eventually.

How can you distinguish between meadow and marsh without feeling the squish of the muck under your boots? Terrain types are indistinct and abstracted, I mean what is the area around the dark wanderer? I can't tell if it is a volcanic plain or swamp or just some funny colored vegetation.

A threestem fruit tree might be a shrub and white oak could be little more than bramble.

Surely there are more important things to worry about, stick your observations on the bug tracker where they won't get lost as easily.

One will have to take the surrounding landscape into account. As an example, imagine the Neoten Consumer valley behind the Camp Banished, this place looks like it will probably gather more water than a flat meadow. And regarding mountains ... well, "trees growing on higher hills" do exist, may that be fine; one place is the corner above the Fallen Lovers, just before the Pool of Stealth.
