Like an ant in syrup
« on: August 29, 2012, 08:07:24 am »
Hi! It has gone over a year since I played PlaneShift last time. It worked well, despite that some graphical trouble sometimes during the game, depending on which place I visited, pitch black or white, making me "blind", but it was worth to play anyway. Now I deside to pick up this playing again, and discover that it changed to a upgraded version, so I've to reinstall the game to be shure to get it work properly. With same gears as last time I begin with it, and that black screen emerged, as last time, but I've to wait up to 5 min. before the uploading screen showed up, and even that take a very long time to complete.  The following login screen was no trouble with, but to create a character... writing the charactername take about 5 sec. per character, choos a race take about 5 min. before that description for that character emerged, scrolling down to read moore about it take same time, the image for that character doesn't emerge, so there I'm stucked, it take so long time to create a character, so I leave the game in this state. I've have read this forum for information about this, and the central problem seems to be a source of problem. I think my gears meets the minimum requirements, I've a 1.3 GHz machine with 0.7 Gb ram. The graphic card is a Gforce MX 440, 64Mb, bus AGP 4x. Open GL. Op.sys is Ubuntu 10.04, and with automatic updates, I think I've the latest drivers from NVIDIA. If it's the graphic card is too week, pleas give me a recommendation on a better card, suitable to AGP slots, and can be handled by Ubuntu. (trouble with their policy about open source, GPL(?)). If it's even my machine that is to week, well... then I've to forget to play PlaneShift for a not predictable time.

Welcome to the forums.

No, GeForce MX 440 (which is indeed rather Generation 2 than 4) is seriously outdated. PlaneShift would work on a Generation 6, but a Generation 8 should be the minimum today. And support for AGP ports is fading. Furthermore, less than 2 GB RAM and less than 2 cores aren't recommendable either. I wouldn't use your kind of PC for more than network routing / firewall or similar services, but not even for office work anymore, leave alone gaming...
