Character design, plot design, flaws, and RP
« on: September 09, 2014, 05:19:28 am »
What types of character flaws do you find work well for generating RP-acceptable conflict?  I'm trying to get a better picture of this, especially considering that the social-interaction flaws I tend to put into some characters (especially my main) turn off RPers more than they ever generate RP.

Also, how should I approach other players regarding designing their plots in such a way that they work better when characters who behave as professionals participate (i.e. those characters that don't make the obvious mistakes the plot initially expects them to)?

you didn't like that bucket of carp? or you just considered it OOC? It was directly related to your behavior in the Gorgar hunt. Why would you want to tell other people how to design their plots or was that not what you meant?

It has been my experience that people who view themselves as a certain thing are usually deluding themselves and come off quite differently than they think. No intentions are more common than misunderstood intentions. I like to think I am witty and urbane but people just find me boorish and unsophisticated.

What does "behave as professionals" have to do with "makes the obvious mistakes the plot initially expect them to"? Wouldn't a professional actor play along with the plot or at least play off it in a manner that doesn't disrupt the whole thing?

my 2 cents although Canada has eliminated the penny. keep the change.

Kaerli, it might help if you don't expect more than others can and/or are willing to give. On our first meeting you expected a more detailed description of my dagger. I am no expert on daggers and it is just a tool I must learn to use. Our next meeting was something else. Your pushing Lorra for an answer to your question and then getting something quite different than you expected. That is what interaction is all about.

The bucket of carp actually is completely unrelated to this thread.

As to the notion of "behave as professionals", you are confusing IC and OOC, Bilbous.  I'm referring to the character acting in a manner befitting a professional fighter/smith/..., not the player behaving in a manner akin to a professional actor.

I actually didn't think it was about the carp, that comment was in reference to (to paraphrase) not generating role play. It might not have been inspiring role play but it was something anyway.

As far as the Character acting in a manner befitting of his profession you should consider that nobody is professional 24/7 unless they really don't have a life. If you are a dour mercenary just waiting for the next battle it does not leave a lot of room for anything else. Go to the bathhouse and get into a fight with that other woman who steals your soap. Conceding that there are neither bathhouses nor soap in the game. When you are about your profession focus on it, crack related jokes, offer or ask for advice from others doing the same. Compare notes or tell tall tales.

If you have to plan everything out you will miss a lot of great stuff. It doesn't have to be too hard.

But what do I know. I don't get involved in great plots and melodramas. I just go along and try to have some fun.
