Low FPS
« on: June 13, 2003, 12:56:40 pm »
The game seems nice, however the FPS (frames per second) are rather low - on an Athlon XP 2000 with Geforce 4200 and 512MB RAM it\'s about 4 or 5 and that\'s on 640x480. It is slow enough to count the frames :)
Is it a problem with the game (e.g. no distance clipping), is it a problem with my graphics card and OpenGL or is there some secret to get an acceptable framerate? Right now i almost get nauseous when climbing a spiral staircase etc.

i presume you use win* (probably winxp)

there are several factors to why PS is a bit slow:
- PS\'s code is still dirty, because the most (all) effort is put into implementing new stuff
- you use a precompile version which is unoptimised for your computer specs (there\'s source, but as a win* user, don\'t try it unless you really know what you\'re doing)
- PS is (at this stage) very hungry (dirty code)
- unofficially it\'s sometimes (very rarely!) the server\'s fault

You assume correctly. Well, looks like i need to stay away from spiral staircases in the meantime :)

naaaaah ...\"lag\" usually happens when it starts and stops to rain ...plus it usually depends on how many people are around
...stairs? ...the \"jumping\" you see is probably normal ...the devs haven\'t made stair-climbing fluid yet ...it just \"jumps\" on each stair ...probably nothing to do with \"lag\"

Hey I\'ve been experiencing horrible fps in certain places:
Rain start/stop.
When my char\'s nose is pointing towards that Inn or that Temple (no matter what the distance is). I can\'t go in on either place, since my fps drops to 1 millionth frame/sec, UNLESS I turn my nose towards the ground. Then I can try to leave the are (barely).
Also when I have the \'chat\' screen on (F1), the fps is reduced greatly.

I use 800x600x16bpp on:
D900 / 382MB
Gf2 32MB.
And WinXP (migrating to Linux in some point tho)

Otherwise the game\'s running just fine, when taking into account what version it is. Oh and thanks guys, great work :)

what\'s keeping you from it?!? :]

the \"lag-points\" Ajatollah pointed out are correct, another \"lag-point\" is also the plaza, when a lot of characters (re)spawn.
