Cant Make Character

The game looks very nice.. but I never was able to create a character. No matter what name I put (even a jarble of letters doesnt work.. ) it tells me the name is taken. Oh, and on top of that, the game always has an illegal operation in something that has to do with sound and then shuts itself down after a set period of time.

I really want to play, but havent been able to cause of these.. any suggestions on fixes?

The character creation issue is almost always due to some kind of connection problem. I have a few suggestions, as this is not a problem I\'m very familiar with as of yet.

The server may have been down coincidentally during the time you were trying to upload your character, or perhaps you\'re running a firewall or something else is causing a \'linkdead\' type problem. Check this section for the \'Important:\' thread regarding Linkdead for more information on that.

Make sure your client is up-to-date by running the Updater program.

Check server status on the PlaneShift Fragnetics Server website. If it\'s offline, you won\'t be able to upload your character or play the game.


Concerning the sound issue, could you provide some more information on that? Maybe the exact error message you receive (if possible) and the make and model of your soundcard. Make sure you have the latest drivers installed too. Really I have no idea about this issue but that seems the most logical thing to ask you for.

Hmm.. My sound card?

Looking through device manager I think its \"VIA AC\'97 Enhanced Audio Controller\". But I dunno. I snagged a driver off windowsupdate.com not too long ago. But really, I have no clue if I am right on this being the sound thing. Its the only logical choice seeing the others are the joystick port and something for MIDI.

I would have to go rerun the setup (I uninstalled it yesterday when I couldn\'t upload character.) and wait five minutes or so for the game to nail me with the message about the sound. Hold out till then.

hmm.. still not able to upload character after updating. Using name Saito.. Ajira.. Catnip.. Nothing seems to work.

Apparently the entire reinstall seems to have fixed the sound problem.. It would have crashed by now. However, another recent development is it tells me Im linkdead. What is that all about? I shouldn\'t be, I have DSL and stuff.

There\'s a sticky thread in this section of the forums about \'Linkdead\'. You should go read that and see if it helps you any. Good luck.
