Draw Distance
« on: October 06, 2003, 03:38:21 am »
Hey there I\'m a n00b who has just started playing.

I\'m just wondering if there is (or is going to be) any way to change the draw distance in PS, like the slider on the graphics page in Morrowind and in other such games.  Being a dialup user, my pathetic little 56k has a lot of trouble constantly updating such large areas and what the players in that area are doing, and so no matter what I do in the graphics setup, I end up with about 2 or 3 fps, at best.  It\'s the first time I\'ve seen a 2.8Ghz lag to hell and back :P

I\'ve read a lot of the documentation and can\'t find anything on changing such an option, so I assume that either it hasn\'t been implemented or I should look harder :D

Well, its all a matter if its supported in CS.  I don\'t think it was supported very well at MB\'s launch, but I believe its improved since then.

Also, I\'m most certain your framedroppage isn\'t due to lag.  Its all CS\' fault, or so I\'ve heard.  Expect your framerate to improve in future versions of Planeshift, especially in the next December release, CB.

Yeah, I was wondering if the engine would even support draw distances.  From what I\'ve seen it looks like it just does pretty much everything in a huge radius.  I just figured that if it were possible, having the option of smaller areas to update would be good for lower end modem users, and would help the game run at a decent framerate for everyone.

And yes, I\'ve noticed that the current release is kind of slow, which might explain the low speed since my modem doesn\'t even seem to be very busy when I play PS, but lags are to be expected from tech demos I suppose.  Hell, that\'s why it\'s here, isn\'t it?  To playtest the current modes of play and find all the bugs like that.  I\'ll wait for the next release and see if it improves.

I still think that a draw distance option if at all possible would be advantageous, though.

nono PS doesn\'t want Draw Distance. CS will have a good LOD (level of detail) system instead that will make sure there is not sevral polygons per pixel (this can happen otherwise if a med-poly object is far away and not clipped away).

Anyway Draw Distance = foggy      LOD = ownage  8)
Put the pot down, no dont take another puff!, put it down. Thank you.

Yea LOD sounds much better than draw distance, and is much more realistic too.
