Can Anyone Help me?
« on: November 19, 2003, 09:38:17 pm »
Ok first off, Sorry about this I\'m a newbie, but I think this is more a technical question. Here it goes; I downloaded the software then installed it. I played for about 5min then decided to change a setup (current setup was 800x600 and 8bit). I logged out, then when I went to setup it told me I had an error (PSSETUP caused an invalid page fault in
module AWS.DLL at 0167:00b50f01). I tryed to come back in world and I had another error. I\'ve rebooted, cold-booted, un-installed and re-installed I still get the same thing. Sorry I\'m just alittle computer illiterate. If there is anyone that can help thankyou. If not thanks for trying :)

Could you tell us a bit about your system specs? What OS are you using? What\'s your graphics card? etc. All I can say right now is that AWS.dll is a file related to Crystal Space, the game\'s engine.

Computer is:
HP Pavillion XE736
Intel Celeron 600mhz 256MB
20GB HD(factory), 8.6 GB Western Digital Caviar
Intel i810 3d, w/32MB shared
Crystal Audio Codec/MPU401 compatible
Win 98SE 4.10.2222 A
DirectX 9.0b 4.09.0000.0902
IE 6.0.2800.1106 SP1
MS XML 4.0 4.0 SP2 Parser & SDK
MS  .NET Framework 1.1

(Rhaps\'s hubby)
Rhaps built her 1st toon, logged in
(800x600x16 full screen) Played for a few minutes.
Graphics were somewhat jumpy and lagged on this old CPU, so she logged out, ran setup & changed to
(640x480x8 full screen) and was no longer able to start the client. Tried running setup again, and began getting the AWS.dll error.

She tried uninstall, cold boot, reinstall, same problem
I did cold boot, uninstall, manually deleted PS directory,
ran regedit, removed all references I found to Planeshift
Cold boot, reinstalled, still same error:

PSSETUP caused an invalid page fault in
module AWS.DLL at 0167:00b50f01.

The client won\'t function either. AWS.dll has something to do with Alternate Windows or something, but that\'s as much as I could decipher from the *.cfg files in the data directory(my programming skills being limited to old GW Basic and therefor almost nil)

Anyone help would be appreciated, Rhaps and I are looking for a new game to replace Asheron\'s Call, and are greatly looking forward to a mor in depth look at Planeshift

you can better wait untill the next version of planeshift is released, it will probably fix your problem and there isn\'t much you can do right now in-game(with not much i mean nothing, even the npc\'s are gone now so all you can do is chat and collect crystals).
Crystal Blue will be released in about a month, but i don\'t know if you will be able to get it to work with a 600mhz cpu..

I seem to remember getting the same kind of error in the past, allthough that was on a different pc.

The problem with me was that I had my screen set to 24-bits (cs doesn\'t support that). Which gave me the same error.
Turned it to 16 and it worked fine.

Apparantly you got this problem after changing the resolution and color depth for the game, so it seems related.

Well, not really a solution. Sorry that I can\'t be of any more assistence :(

Graphics tips & Thx for the help
« Reply #5 on: November 20, 2003, 05:56:02 am »
Thx for the help Keldorn

Apparently, Planeshift won\'t run 8 bit on my computer
When I tried to run it in 8 bit, it was setting my desktop color to 8 bit also.
The next attempt to run setup would produce the same error repeatedly.
After 3-4 futile attempts at reinstalling, I finally noticed the color depth problem, LOL
Other than serious in-game lag, it seems to work fine now, I didn\'t even have to wait
too long for the lighting recalculations.(about 2 minutes was all)
I am however experiencing, the aforementioned lag, and some rather severe graphics
glitches. (I think it\'s related to 3D clipping, ie: textures missing, hall of mirrors, building
walls disappearing etc.)
If anyone has some tips/links for editing the graphics
settings, especialy concerning(don\'t laugh) an Intel i810
shared memory 3D card, I\'d really appreciate it

Well, a better video card, faster processor, and/or more memory would probably fix some of your lag problems, obviously.  As for cfg editing, I\'m reasonably sure that there\'s little improvement you could make at the moment; although if memory serves me correctly, one with knowledge of CS can sometimes squeeze a bit more performance out (although this particular case was editing the cfgs to support video card with large amounts of memory, so that\'s not much help in this situation.)

Your best bet would be waiting for the Crystal Blue release, which should come in at least a month; rumor has it that CB will be a drastic improvement, performance wise.
