Is there ANY way I can have Planeshift...?
« on: November 30, 2003, 08:16:18 am »
Is there ANY way I can get Planeshift & updaters etc run through my IE5 settings?

Because it won\'t connect (obviously due to the proxy & firewall, & VERY limited ports open)...

I know playing AN online game is possible this way (Cybertown) BUT, playing one with a much higher transfer rate, I am not sure :(

The only port I got free is 8080...

Running through a proxy, directly to a company, with A firewall (no idea what they are running)...

HELP! :)

Thanks in advance...

With such tight security, I seriously doubt you\'re going to be able to play PS.

You would definitely need to allow UDP access through port 13331 of the firewall in order for server and client to communicate.

If you can\'t allow that, I\'m afraid it\'s all I can offer... not sure if anyone else could find a way around this, though. Good luck anyway.

Thank you for your speedy reply...

I wish I could open just the port I need, but I have a
megelomaniac admin, who absolutely REFUSES to open any ports...

BAH...paying a grand a month (BAD currency) for a private connection is a bit much :(

I ain\'t never gonna play a good online game at this rate...AAAARGH!

:( I\'m sorry to hear that.

You should stick around for a few days to see if anyone offers a solution... you never know.

It\'s not really a solution to your problem, but you have to know you don\'t really need a dsl connection to play Planeshift. If you have a 56k modem, it\'s fine, and you probably won\'t have to pay for the ISP, usually every country has free ones. You will only have to pay the connection time. Just use your company network to download the program and bring it back home.

Sorry that I can\'t help more.

Maybe try to lure the admin into playing Planeshift  ;)

Oh...no :)

I got the connection at home (ISDN - 64kbps, I only get 7kbps on a good day = probably to slow - it sucks to be in South Africa)

But getting my own line (& getting an iSP - SA has NO FREE ISP\'s) is too expensive, no game unfortunatly is worth a grand a month...

ISDN costs you $1000/month? Move to canada, we\'ll give you 1300kbps(165kb/sec) for $16.95 canadian($10).

Actually, your connection should be able to handle PS. It can handle something like 5 players/kb, so 7kb could handle a crowd of atleast 35 people I\'m guessing.

Too bad your firewall has you locked down. My Linksys router with a built-in firewall automatically opens for apps on your computer...wow, that\'s insecure now that I think about it. Oh well :D

No,no,no :)
I live in south africa...

A grand = R1000,00 (Rand)
$1 = R6 (something)

& this includes my monthly ISP subscription...

SO my connection may be fast enough...BUT my admin is still an >SSA< which I couldn\'t get him to open a port or play a game if I payed him...his a crusty old \'bastad\'...
