I think the leader idea is the best one.  Whichever party the most damage came from should get the loot, and the leader of that party is in charge of distributing it among the party.  That avoids stealing and any problems with random people moving in to take loot.  Does detract from the RP of the thief, but the medium we\'re using does set some limits.....
