my first sig. art - c&c please?
« on: February 15, 2004, 04:31:50 am »
Well, I\'ve been playing around with photoshop today and came up with this for my in-game character, Rhogan. What do people think?

http://img23.photobucket.com/albums/v68/jonmack/planeshift/rhogan.png

I wanted it quite simple. Rhogan will be teacher/wise person ( not fully developed character yet - waiting for CB :) ). Hence the scroll/paper look - but I\'m not sure if it\'s too flat, and not old parchment style that I wanted. The wax seal was supposed to be azure colour, that\'s the Way I\'d like Rhogan to go, but I have to warn you I\'m colourblind a bit, so if it\'s not azure, or if the paper is orange or something let me know!!

Also, this weighs in at a pretty hefty 40kb. OK, not hefty, but I consider it big for what the image actually is. It\'s becasue I\'ve got it as 24-bit png for the shadow alpha. But if I get rid of that and just use gif file format it goes down to under 5kb or so. Do you think it\'s worth it?

Anyway, I just thought I\'d post it up and see if anyone likes/hates it. I\'m not that good at the normal drawings and sketches as most people around here, so this will have to do :)

Thanks.

P.S. Thanks to photobucket.com for image hosting  :))

EDIT: Bah! It won\'t let me put img tags around it...   ?(
EDITEDIT: :) But it\'s automatically linked it, how nice,

good job, it\'s simple yet not a pain to the eyes. my advice, make the angles around it transparent, then make it a .gif, it will look cooler

edit:  oh damn, kick me for not reading your post :D lol, well, there you go.

D\'oh! No png\'s ey? Thanks for that. I\'ve never read that you can\'t post png\'s on these forums, and life would be boring if we all knew everything. Sorry. But at least that takes care of my \"to png or not to png\" question! :D Gif it will be then.

hehheh :D yes, as it is, the shadow of the paper is alpha transparent. It\'s just now I have to gif it, that will have to have some static background colour to fade onto. :(  Oh well. Thanks for the comments anyway ;)

I\'ll try and convert it tonight. See whow bad/good it looks :D And I still think the paper could do with a little \"ageing\" myself...

only comment i might make is that the smooth base that the R is on looks as if it\'s raised instead of impressed as it would be on real wax.  Otherwise a smooth composition that looks nice.  GJ

what? on a real press the letter would be raised on the wax. notice that it is depressed around the \"R\" and forms a bowl around the edges. this is caused by a cylander with the letter \"R\" engraved on the bottom. spilling hot wax on the paper makes a nice glob and thats when you press the cylander down on the hot wax for 10 seconds. this makes a nice seal with the letter or patern RAISED not indented. So make a long story short, its supposed to be like that... :P

to my eyes, it looks as if there is the outside ring of wax, pressed outward as it should be, then a raised, smooth plateau of wax with a raised R on it.... it looks to me as if the flattened area comes out instead of goes in... but maybe it\'s just me....

the paper looks too stretched and flat
put some rendering on it to represent folding/curvyness
