Third Party Modding?
« on: May 05, 2004, 03:50:47 am »
\"Thanks to our open development process, the game will be expanded endlessly for years to come\"

Due to the fact that the game is open source and due to the above statement I assume that modding from parties not affiliated with the Planeshift Team would be possible, The thing I am curious about is how open the game will be to modding. Would it be possible to simply release an addition map without having  to have to re download the game, and if somthing like that were possible could that person create NPCs in addition to the allready created ones?

User created content would have to be approved and added to the main server world for people to use it.  Running unsanctioned servers will not be allowed, so you can\'t run a custom version of the game like that.  Unless you take the source for the game and all the content you are running on the server is yours, that is OK I think.

Of course I could be, and often am, wrong about everything.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

Welcome one the forums PsycoP.

Yes it\'s not possible to run a custom server but if you\'re good in modding, you could ask to join the developemtn team.

I prefer one big world than 8 small worlds :)

As far as i understand you can do a total conversion (replacing all art and rules) of PS without worrying.
But for anything less than a total conversion, you need it either be accepted by PS-team to be added, or you must gain the permission to set up a customized PS server (with only modified art and rules).

I don\'t think he was talking about this kind of contribution.

And no one talked about these type of rules...

I\'m sure you\'ll be able to change art without a problem, but only for your client (unless you share it). You might be able to change the world file (but only you\'ll see it, and your character\'s position will be according to the server\'s world file, so you won\'t be able to run through walls and stuff. oh, and you\'ll probebly rubberband like hell :P).
As for the rules, you probebly won\'t be able to change them. That way you could make your char super strong.
But if you make your own server, you\'ll probebly be able to change almost everything, including adding \\ removing features.
But as was said above, if you make a server, it\'s for private use. Anyone logging into it besides you will be illegal.

You are welcome to make your own game with PS engine (client and server) but you must make your own art and rules.  I wish, in fact, that people would make new MMORPGs with our engine separate from PlaneShift.

Toadhead, the point of making an MMORPG with the planeshift engine is that you *wouldn\'t* be using C++ - most of your work would go into level design, dialogue, NPC activity, and other \"story\" related things.

Now, if you *did* have a team, at least one of you would probably be familiar with the PS engine, if only to accelerate the pace of its development in areas important to your game.

Thanks,
Daniel
